A PhD in psychology is known as a psychologist. They can go for licensure to treat people with mental health issues. An MD in psychology is known as a psychiatrist. They have to pass medical board tests & psychiatry specialty exams. They generally are the ones to prescribe psychiatric medications.

PhD’s, PsyD’s and EdD’s can be licensed mental health professionals. They would be known as psychologists. An MD or DO practicing in the mental health specialty is known as a psychiatrist.
