Fossil fuel companies will try to sue states that ban new or existing production. When I speak with powerful actors in energy policy, this fear is a central concern in how governments think about the risks of phasing out fossil fuels. Here is an important intervention in how to reduce those risks:

Brazil’s Congress has been trying to pass a law like this since the early 2000s and may get it through this time. Then a presidential veto, right? Right?

Yesterday, Brazil took a dangerous step toward environmental deregulation. The Senate approved a bill that guts licensing rules—letting many projects skip environmental review entirely. Now it heads to the lower house, where it's likely to pass.

Eric was my office mate for four years in grad school and I am proud to call him one of my longest friends. We used to keep his daughter (now a PhD herself) in our filing cabinet drawer 😂. He was always so pleased when his students did well and I'm glad you were able to celebrate him.

Arresting Quaker women for non-violent protest and breaking into a meeting house to do so. The first time anyone has been arrested in a meeting house in living memory. Despicable behaviour from a Labour government’s Home Office/the Met Police.

Brazil does need updating, badly. And maybe the project needs to think about how to deal with changes in government. Are some of these policies more susceptible to rolling back while others are more permanent fixtures? Bolsonaro dismantled a lot, while other things stayed in place.

Always fascinating to find someone trying to think more systematically about green economy - and across a much wider array of countries than the usual suspects
