I understand your point that it's easier for people to give to those they identify with (and who there are online fundraisers for) but I think there's a lot of charitable giving that isn't this public. And I don't think that just because there are others in need makes it wrong to give to some.

Our faith teaches us to care for the widows and the fatherless. I see these donations as a way for people to turn their grief into action by caring for another family whose lives were unexpectedly and tragically upended by the events of that day.

This comment is really saddening, particularly in response to David's message of hope. I'm a member of this church, though not this congregation, and I and many others are vocal opponents to Trumpism. I'd be surprised if even half of those who donated knew of the shooter's political affiliation.
