Part of a general UCP policy of gutting or defunding (or in some cases both) accountability mechanisms. We see the same thing in access to information where inadequate funding leads to delays & dysfunction as demonstrated by @drewyewchuk.bsky.social in many @ablawg.bsky.social posts.

After invoking the notwithstanding clause to bust the teachersโ strike, Danielle Smith appears to have fucked off to Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Naheed Nenshi, leader of the Official Opposition NDP, said Smith's decision to invoke the notwithstanding clause makes her "the most authoritarian premier in the history of Canada."

We can NEVER NORMALIZE THIS as a country. This is a politician seizing power from the courts to pass law that violates our Charter Rights and Freedoms and every single time itโs used it should be reviled and shamed.

Tossing in a notwithstanding clause and pushing the back to work legislation quick enough for Danielle Smith to fly off to Saudi Arabia seems... I struggle to find a diplomatic word for it... Authoritarian? Cruel? Dickish?

Let's be clear about what happened today.
Premier Smith introduced a bill to strip Albertans of Charter rights,
denied MLAs the opportunity to debate it and the courts the ability to scrutinize it,
and did all of this from her seat on a jet to Saudi Arabia.
Populists like Danielle Smith also skip legislative and judicial scrutiny.
Invoking time allocation. And the notwithstanding clause.
Because they can't hack the hard work of liberal democracy.
It's not conservative at all. It's negligently lazy.
An important noteโฆ
Smith isnโt just overriding the federal Charterโฆ
Sheโs also overriding the Alberta Human Rights Act AND the Alberta Bill of Rights she just rewrote.

Guess Iโd better sleep on it. All I have for my letter to the Premier so far is

27.10.2025 12:39 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 3 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0We are at the point where Danielle Smith would rather violate charter rights and create a constitutional crisisโฆ
Instead of paying teachers fairly and giving kids the classrooms they need.
Read that again.
Because this is where we are.

Because the real issue is that the province never built out municipal school infrastructure to handle the influx of students into Alberta's school system. The province is so far behind that even expedited approval and construction of new schools won't even get us there within the next five years.

RURAL ED CLOSURES - REAL AB Case #1
- ABs are not aware of how frequently rural EDs are closed, and the impact on the people in these communities.
- the ever-worsening stats are meaningless
- it's important to put a human face on what's happening.
Anonymized Actual Case #1:

Idiots like Yager is think it's okay for private industry to take all the profit & leave Albertans paying for all the damages
But when it comes to funding education & healthcare the UCP will talk about the deficit as though regular Albertans caused the shortfall not giveaways to donors

Someone needs to ask why private and charter schools are allowed classroom caps? Shouldnโt they be held to the same standards as public schools because they receive public funding?
Alternatively, he could be asked if it would be fine for all public schools to implement their own classroom caps.
That is, of course, unless you're talking about private schools...
Then it becomes one of the most important things that the Alberta Government recommends parents pay attention to while choosing a private school.

The Alberta government stopped tracking class sizes, and then the province's population growth really took off. @robsonfletcher.com set out to find out how the numbers of teachers compare to that growth, with the limited info available
Class size/composition is a strike issue.

However, a political scientist is casting doubt on the entire exercise.
#DuaneBratt of Mount Royal University notes the discussions were based on anecdotal comments and unscientific straw polls, and were framed around the government's #predetermined topics.
