Would love it if Alberta had an effective news media or effective political opposition or like anyone actually capable of exposing this shit for what it so obviously is.
20.02.2026 19:58 β π 11 π 4 π¬ 1 π 0I am writing to advise that Minister Nicolaides, his staff, and the Education and Childcare Department will not be accepting questions, interview requests, or requests for comment from CityNews Calgary or any affiliated outlets or reporters, nor will they be sent invitations to embargoed technical briefings until a formal apology is issued to Minister Nicolaides for the politicized reporting of his hike of Mount Kilimanjaro, undertaken in memory of his late sister. As stated in my earlier response to CityNews, politicizing a deeply personal act of remembrance was profoundly disrespectful. Despite the purpose of the trip being clearly explained, your reporter showed a clear disregard for context, sensitivity, and professional responsibility in pursuing this line of questioning. The attempt to manufacture a narrative about provincial flags and separatism is not only baseless but also demonstrates a reckless disregard for the truth. If there were a genuine interest in the Minister's stance on the unity of Canada, a direct question would have been the appropriate and professional course of action. Your reporter was offered that opportunity but instead chose to prioritize sensationalism over facts. That was a deliberate editorial choice. This type of reporting is beneath the standards Albertans expect. If CityNews wishes to restore communication with the Ministry of Education and Childcare, the following conditions must be met: 1) The story is removed from publication. 2) A formal apology is issued by both the reporter and the editor of CityNews Calgary. Until this conduct is fully acknowledged and addressed, CityNews has demonstrated that it cannot be trusted to engage with this office in a manner that is ethical, responsible, or respectful. Sincerely, Garrett Koehler Senior Press Secretary Ministry of Education and Childcare

When asked if they would vote for their province to begin the process of separating from Canada and seeking a new agreement to define its future relationship with the country, approximately three in 10 residents of both Alberta (29%) and Quebec (31%) say yes. This includes those who say they would definitely or probably vote yes, and those who say they would lean toward voting yes. However, new Ipsos research which "stress-tested" these sentiments by introducing real-world consequences reveals that actual committed support for separation is roughly half these levels in both provinces, with only 15 to 16% of Albertans and Quebecers maintaining their support after considering possible costs. This means that for roughly half of separatist supporters in both provinces, independence is more a political message than a plan they are prepared to endure costs to achieve.
To set the record straight, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said today that about 30 per cent, or 1M, Albertans support independence. This is false. The latest IPSOS poll found about 15 per cent support for separation from Canada when those polled were informed about the "real-world consequences."
