Quite minor in the grand scheme of things, but one thing I think blue states (and CA in particular) should be doing if we morph into tariffsland is require companies operating in the state (above some size) to list the price of tariffs on receipts separately

How often do pay cuts happen vs say, non-tendering? I don't know that I've heard of a pay cut for an arb-eligible player before

pro tip: don’t call something a β€œdebate” when one side is just trying to defend their human rights and the other is trying to punish their existence.

You may not be aware that over the last 50 years, the Supreme Court has chipped away at your Miranda rights case by case, rendering them weak and ineffective. You no longer have the right to remain silent, to an attorney, not with the foece you used to. Time for a history lesson. /🧡

Have you seen a bald eagle lately? They're everywhere! They almost went extinct because of DDT & have made a stunning comeback & that's the sort of story we need right now

a PSA since a lot of folks have been surprised to learn this: terminal programs often support the mouse! Try:

- opening `htop` and clicking a column header to sort
- opening `nano` (or vim, or micro) and clicking and dragging to select text
- using the scroll wheel in `mc`

it often Just Works

a reply to yesterday's posting arrives, and i find myself ask myself the same question over and over

"why is someone dredging up the past? i've moved on from who i was as a person eight hours ago"

A text block that reads: The online world has become so hostile to users that Bluesky’s pitch of β€˜here is a straightforward feed of text-based user-generated posts that we promise not to mess with’ is revelatory. Its scaling model and raison d’Γͺtre are a very rejection of the platforms that have colonized the rest of our digital lives, and relentlessly commodified them. No wonder everyone seems to be rooting for its success, even if there are, pointedly, no guarantees those ideals will remain in place.

I think it's really important to think in broad terms about Helmuth's tenure at Scientific American. Because it has been truly remarkable. Bear with me here, because I think this matters and is worth thinking about. 🧡πŸ§ͺ #SciWri24

You did a remarkable job, and the next editor-in-chief has big shoes to fill.

Also certainly says something about that duality of trans people either being "too young to know" or "gross adult monsters with misshapen bodies" narrative. Because transphobes both want to deny kids the right puberty, then blame/demonize them once they grow up.

Sorry, I don't care if I'm in an echo chamber. It's fucking Saturday. I don't need to be confronted with endless transphobia and "just asking questions" folks when all I want is to laugh at some stupid jokes while I eat Reese's pancakes and ignore my family.
