CBS went to a military food pantry (those words, in order) to interview moms. 13% of military families rely on SNAP/WIC. When a military spouse of a deployed soldier on enlisted salary was asked if people should be surprised: “No they shouldn’t. We live in poverty just like everybody else.”

Cancer killed his parents. He’s facing the same disease alone — and unhoused. Marcus Ford, like other Black men around the country, lives with a higher risk of dying from cancer due to factors out of his control. But Medicaid cuts may take away his treatment.

What does our health care system look like? What does our social safety net look like?

It looks like Marcus. At 61, he spends most nights riding the Chicago Red Line or looking for a park bench or bus stop, trying to find sleep. He recently finished radiation treatment for prostate cancer.

Some — if not much — of the problem we face today is in not believing Republicans are cruel — when they have been demonstrating in deeds and words otherwise for many years.

A hunger cliff is days away. Women, children and food banks will feel it first. Food banks will face logistical and financial challenges in providing the resources currently offered by the SNAP and WIC programs that are set to lose funding.

We can disagree about policy. But we should never disagree about whether a child deserves to eat.

We literally do disagree about this, though. Some politicians want to take food from children and some politicians don't. Pretending this "isn't political" just allows the child-starving ghouls to get away with it.
