When a chatbot gets something wrong, it’s not because it made an error. It’s because on that roll of the dice, it happened to string together a group of words that, when read by a human, represents something false. But it was working entirely as designed. It was supposed to make a sentence & it did.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Great advice! When I welcome new teachers my advice is always anticipate/ prepare your reactions to common student behaviour ex: if you assign homework some students may not do it. If you're prepared for this then your response becomes routine, equitable, and not emotional.

Mark Carney posts: “Canada condemns the Israeli government's failure to prevent the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian disaster in Gaza. Israel's control of aid distribution must be replaced by comprehensive provision of humanitarian assistance led by international organizations. Many of these are holding significant Canadian-funded aid which has been blocked from delivery to starving civilians. This denial of humanitarian aid is a violation of international law. Canada calls on all sides to negotiate an immediate ceasefire in good faith. We reiterate our calls for Hamas to immediately release all the hostages, and for the Israeli government to respect the territorial integrity of the West Bank and Gaza.”

Mark Carney’s post continues: “Canada supports a two-state solution which guarantees peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians. Canada will work intensively in all fora to further that end, including through the participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs at the UN High-Level Conference on a Two-State Solution in New York next week.”

Carney has put out another strongly worded finger-wagging for Israel with NO concrete action.

YouTube tops the list of the online platforms we asked about in our survey. Nine-in-ten teens report using the site, slightly down from 95% in 2022. TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat remain widely used among teens. Roughly six-in-ten teens say they use TikTok and Instagram, and 55% say the same for Snapchat. Facebook and X use have steeply declined over the past decade. Today, 32% of teens say they use Facebook. This is down from 71% in 2014-15, though the share of teens who use the site has remained stable in recent years. And 17% of teens say they use X (formerly Twitter) – about half the share who said this a decade ago (33%), and down from 23% in 2022. Roughly one-quarter of teens (23%) say they use WhatsApp, up 6 percentage points since 2022. And 14% of teens use Reddit, a share that has remained stable over the past few years. We asked about Threads, launched by parent company Meta in 2023, for the first time this year. Only 6% of teens report using it.

So apparently the AP Human Geography site is culling some of its "daily videos" for class use. A teacher tells me the videos on redlining and white flight are gone. In the screenshot below, you can see the Daily Videos start with no. 2 (no. 1 on this page was redlining, and it's gone now).
