I am dedicating my next few pieces (and maybe my next book) to gently highlighting how awful the theory of penal substitutionary atonement & many of its popular tendrils have been for our souls.

AND to how the gospel is still beautiful, true, and worth shouting from the rooftops without it.

The darkness at the break of noon on Good Friday does not reveal the nature of God to us—“God is light and in him there is no darkness at all.” Rather, the darkness in the middle of the day reveals the true and diabolical nature of a world organized around an axis of power enforced by violence.

Good morning, beloved.

Humility will change the world.

You are not better than anybody.

But ain’t nobody better than you.

I sometimes fear that people think that fascism arrives in fancy dress worn by grotesques and monsters as played out in endless re-runs of the Nazis. Fascism arrives as your friend. It will restore your honour, make you feel proud, protect your house, give you a job, clean up your neighbourhood, remind you of how great you once were, clear out the venal and the corrupt, remove anything you feel is unlike you... It doesn't walk in saying, "Our programme means militias, mass imprisonments, transportations, war and persecution" "In my work with the defendants (at the Nuremberg Trials 1945-1949) I was searching for the nature of evil, and I now think I have come close to defining it. A lack of empathy. It's the one characteristic that connects all the defendants, a genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow men. Evil, I think is the absence of empathy. Quote: Captain G.M.Gilbert, the army psychologist assigned to watching the defendants at the Nuremberg Trials.

We are easily led by good words that touch our longings and desires and frequently make the mistake of assuming the words are true. A culture of words trusted when spoken or written but not lived out in the flesh is a dangerous place.

I think you're right. The loss of that superpower does correlate to improved sleep.

Being able to tell roughly what time it is when I wake up in the middle of the night. I've very recently lost this superpower, though. I used to know within an hour. Now I'm way off.

When emotional power and verbal power are combined in ways that speak to the deep longings of people’s hearts, the force is great. Add spiritual language evoking the authority of God, and you can manipulate vulnerable people in hideous ways.

I use "church hurt" when I don't want to go into details or be regarded with suspicion. If I say, "spiritual abuse," I feel the defensive walls go up. "Church hurt" does minimize, but I think it can be used as a general umbrella term too. And I think it's ok to choose my level of disclosure.

Our oldest would repeatedly get out of bed. Nothing worked. We happened upon a solution when he was around 4 & fascinated by numbers. We discovered he would consider the digital clock an absolute authority on bedtime in a way we weren't. He'd enthusiastically say, "It's 8 o'clock! Time for bed!"

We just watched it for the umpteenth time. It's been an annual tradition for the last 10 years or so. Love this movie.

It's time we stop promoting & defending theologies that identify God w descriptions the scriptures only predicate to the wicked/unjust. Penal substitutionary atonement isn't just incongruent w the apostolic testimony, it's incompatible bc it identifies God by the actions of the wicked/unjust. 9/
