Speaking on an Australia Institute webinar, Nobel Prize-winning economist Professor Joseph Stiglitz has urged the Australian Government to “follow the money” and start imposing a “a very, very high tax rate” on the country’s natural resources.

Albanese dismisses Aukus concerns as submarine shipyard cost revealed to be $30bn Prime minister commits $3.9bn as ‘down payment’ for Adelaide facility to eventually build nuclear-powered vessels

The AUKUS agreement has now been in place for 4 years. During that time both the US & UK have undertaken reviews of its progress. With the Albanese govt now admitting its South Australian submarine base will cost at least $30bn, it's well past time Australia undertook its own AUKUS review.

The peer review system is breaking down. Here’s how we can fix it Peer review is so integral to the scholarly system that research would grind to a halt without it.

The whole publish or perish approach has not served us well.

‘A lingering in stillness’: philosopher Byung-Chul Han on the radical power of gardening Is gardening a form of resistance in a world demanding endless efficiency and self-optimisation?

Thoughtful read.
Reading Han in conjunction with Arendt readings lately has opened up some new possibilities in approaches to our various crises.

Interesting. Japan’s Nikkei is running a story in the change in leadership for the Liberal Party.
Today, the contrived coalition of Chudo, the Centrist Reform Alliance which contested last Sunday’s election, will hold a leadership ballot.
Parliamentary politics is a bit of a mess at the moment.

Lots of Jon Kudelka’s cartoons made it to the fridge door, but this one took pride of place on my office doors, many and various, as I made my way as a budding political philosopher. Vale.

Very sad to share the news of this legend of Australian political cartooning, and art. Dear Jon Kudelka has died, and we will be the poorer and more dull for his passing.
Sending love and condolences to his family.
What a legacy of scorching wit and joyful capturing of life he leaves.

The 1947 Constitution has not been amended, yet. No referendum has been held, yet.

Article 96 of the Japanese constitution refers to amendments to the constitution. A referendum, put to the voters, is required to make amendments. The two-thirds majority in the parliament gives the LDP the chance to propose amendments to Art 9, to put to the voters.

Ishin remains very Osaka-centred (as expected), it will cling on to try and remain relevant in govt but the coalition agreement the leaders drew up while thinking they had a modicum of influence will mean little.

I wonder how long Takaichi will keep her Ishin coalition partner in the tent, once the extent of the majority is confirmed.

Takaichi being very low key in her interview with journalists. (Not a victory speech.)

A number of previously disendorsed LDP candidates have been returned, having received renewed endorsement this time around (including ‘my’ electorate). I guess voters aren’t that concerned about corruption or accept it as a normalised part of politics. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Uh-oh, just heard a reference to ‘Takaichi Children’, a throwback to other successful LDP results when the media liked to attribute the candidates’ election to the charisma of the leader. Some have never shaken that label.
