We had a tree fall on our house during a terrible storm last summer; when it was finally removed, they needed a crane to hoist it over our house into the street. It drew a sizable and appreciative crowd!

One more thought about #nokings Minneapolis — hope this doesn’t add a negative vibe, but it revealed The Commons as a poor substitute for a true central public plaza. Layout is haphazard and the sight lines are poor for this kind of thing. Would have been a lot worse if Portland were open to cars!

Letter reading: am following with great interest the Supreme Court case regarding Louisiana redistricting. And I have a proposal for a constitutional amendment. Here’s what we do: Start at the northern border of every state. Go south until you get to the exact spot in population to equal one congressional district. Draw a straight line, east to west. Voilà, you have the first congressional district for that state. Keep going south to the next precise population boundary, draw another straight line across. District 2. If a state has 35 districts, make 34 cuts. Some will be super-narrow, some will be fat. All will have perfectly straight boundaries on the top and bottom. Redraw them every 10 years. No commissions, no politics, just surveyors and demographers. Here’s where it gets interesting: To be perfectly fair, we would alternate horizontal and vertical cuts every 10 years.
