RIP to the great Prunella Scales, whose biography in Wikipedia contains the most British possible collection of words.

I think any story about Trump's autocracy should be mostly about the people and institutions who failed to stop it. This guy isn't a political genius, everything else just happens to be rotten. 'Toddler Consolidates Power In Household' is a story about incompetent parents, not shrewd maneuvering

Kind of weird how hard this article tries to elide the fact that one of the anti-bike-lane activists ran hard on that issue and lost soundly!

Oh my god some fucking tech dingdong posted this on Twitter with the caption "AI games are going to be amazing" totally seriously, you have to watch it. You have to. In full screen.

My wife and I got our first tattoos after we turned 50 for just that reason. We know ourselves pretty well, and we have much less time for them to fade!

Judging by a quick glance at the website, looks like it might be falling to opinion columnists now? But we’ll see!

I was also inclined to believe that the front page on Sunday is pretty much set in stone early Saturday, but it’s hard to overlook the complete lack of follow up in today’s paper.

I’ve been worried about this very thing β€” I settled on Crash Course: The Universe because it’s an interesting subject but not so much so that it keeps me awake, and it has soothing music and calm voices. But I’ve cycled through the history of the universe about 8 times and facing diminishing returns

I tried this after you posted it earlier; the effect was short-lived but very noticeable! I’m interested to see what comes from doing it repeatedly.

Even as someone who in recent memory has been inside a house while a full-size tree fell on it, I found this video mesmerizing

We had a tree fall on our house during a terrible storm last summer; when it was finally removed, they needed a crane to hoist it over our house into the street. It drew a sizable and appreciative crowd!

Only time I ever saw one for real was on the el in Chicago, 1990 or so, and nothing prepared me for how ridiculous they were. The self-satisfied vibe of β€œyou’re safe now citizen” married to real-life powerlessness just radiated off of him.

I was already hooked by the topic, but just saw that it’s narrated by Maxine Peake, who was so good in Say Nothing, and now I’m really looking forward to it!

Very large spider atop a mailbox

Very large spider atop a mailbox

A few weeks ago I saw a bunch of cobwebs on our mailbox; I brushed them off, only to see them return the next day. After a couple days of this, I finally saw this big ol’ spider dash furtively behind the mailbox whenever I’d approach. We have now ceded the mailbox to her until winter.

It took most monarchies centuries of inbreeding to reach this level of syphilitic derangement; absolutely humiliating to go straight there for our first king

Yep, I know it’s hard for people to resist dunks, but from where I sit it seems like the containment strategy is working!

It’s served that role historically β€” thinking of Pride, Take Back the Night, and Iraq War protests β€” probably because there hasn’t been anywhere downtown that works well, except for the Hennepin County government center for smaller events

For sure, it worked great at the first one. St Paul also has Rice and Mears parks. Honestly I think the best equivalent for Minneapolis would be Loring Park.

Also, because it’s on the far east side of downtown, most people came from the west and crammed into the smaller of the two halves.

One more thought about #nokings Minneapolis β€” hope this doesn’t add a negative vibe, but it revealed The Commons as a poor substitute for a true central public plaza. Layout is haphazard and the sight lines are poor for this kind of thing. Would have been a lot worse if Portland were open to cars!

Hard to get a good sense of how many people/anglerfish were at #nokings from the middle of the crowd, but it looked huge!

I used to think your crackpot redistricting plans were made up, but then the other day I was standing in a voting booth…

Letter reading: am following with great interest the Supreme Court case regarding Louisiana redistricting. And I have a proposal for a constitutional amendment.
Here’s what we do: Start at the northern border of every state. Go south until you get to the exact spot in population to equal one congressional district. Draw a straight line, east to west. VoilΓ , you have the first congressional district for that state. Keep going south to the next precise population boundary, draw another straight line across. District 2.
If a state has 35 districts, make 34 cuts. Some will be super-narrow, some will be fat. All will have perfectly straight boundaries on the top and bottom. Redraw them every 10 years.
No commissions, no politics, just surveyors and demographers.
Here’s where it gets interesting: To be perfectly fair, we would alternate horizontal and vertical cuts every 10 years.

Every few days the Star Tribune will publish a letter with this One Weird Trick that will solve democracy, and it’s invariably the dumbest shit you’ve read in your life
