It would have been good to hear the cabinet justify this expense. Especially given that County and two MPs are proposing a far larger unitary.
Even more so, because they are likely to loose control in May.
This is a change you may like.
independents4ypcambs.uk
The chamber will be a very expensive part of the refurbishment. And if the unitary is bigger than 74 Cllrβs, or if it is not chosen, - the extra expense will not be justified.
26.09.2025 05:22 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0So I raised my hand to clarify two points. .
1/ was there agreement that the new unitary would meet at the Guildhall?
2/ are the cabinet clear that 74 seats will be enough for the new unitary?
I believe democracy was failed by the leader not using their discretion to hear me.
Especially as I realised there was a weakness in the argument that the expense was justified, because the refurbished chamber would be used by the new unitary.
26.09.2025 05:22 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I challenged the chair for not using their discretion to allow me to speak as bullying using the labour majority.

Sad really!
I went to Cambridgeβs council chamber to watch the Cabinet Meeting.
Much of the meeting was about Β£92 million being spent on the civic centre. Particular emphasis was on how the council chamber was at the heart of Cambridgeβs democracy.
π€
I tried to ask a question, I was refused.
π
Some democracy!
Independents4YPCambs is the only hope to get a change in the current system. But we need to grow locally and then we can have impact. Please join us? Help us to build a grass roots movement and win seats in May - Then it will be Your Party.

We need to organise, to win seats! Especially, given that May26 is probably the last ever election for our current councils. The councils we elect then, will likely be there for two years (at least). AND they will be setting the terms for the new Unitary Council.
independents4ypcambs.uk/contact
I am now an independent in waiting. But I will not standby idly and wait for others. I cannot claim to fill the gap whilst Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana MP disagree. But if we all pull together, we can!

When over 1,000,000 people sign up for a clear agenda for change, it is a real proof that people are looking for an alternative to the far right. We need to see an end to austerity, protect our NHS, nationalise key industries and stop sending arms to Israel.

We need to be honest, left leaning people are struggling. Our original party has abandoned its roots, and us, and we need a voice.
π
But there is a new hope. Your Party has captured hearts and minds.
π
Peter Cushing, itβs a great idea to have a light rail network in our area and Expensive, but potentially the way to go.
Would love to work with you.
The GCP green/bus ways will be built to convert, so the work has sort of started.
After finance, is the major problem in Cambridge?
There is a political storm coming. This sort of action by the LibDems is neither liberal or democratic.
More like battening down the hatches to prevent discussion.

I expect the Mayor to be saying bad things about migrants but i find it hard to believe that Sam Carling and Andrew Pakes appear to be supporting him

The slaughter of innocents in Gaza continues!
π§
We could stop this!
π§
At least politicians could.
π§
I argue that we all have a responsibility to do our bit.
π§
Could you write to your MP, asking them to intervene in our governmentβs policy?
π§
Silence isnβt neutral!
And speaking out.

I believe βwhat you donβt challenge, you condone.
This busway is designed to
1/ reduce the need to drive into Cambridge.
2/ provides safe cycle and walking route into Cambridge
3/ reduce carbon emission
4/ reduce climate change
5/ to provide a bed for light rail in the future.

Itβs very apt when applied to politics. It involves a duty to be transparent, tell the whole truth, not hide anything and not remaining silent
π§
To me it ranks alongside the expression βWhat you donβt condemn you condone.β

Itβs about putting your principles first.

Fantastic speech Baiju.
It was wonderful that you approached head on the question that has been raised by @keirstarmer.bsky.social about migration.
Here in Cambridge we have 120 nations, 80 languages and 40 religion in our city of sanctuary and are grateful to live in such a cosmopolitan environment
@keirstarmer.bsky.social further to my earlier message.
To make Cambridge the powerhouse you want, maybe you can keep the successful city council that manages what it is today?
@keirstarmer.bsky.social could this be worth a look?
π
Cambridge needs the space to breath if it going to be successful. Having a Tory Mayor imposed by electors with little link to Cambridge is like having a foot on our chest.
