It is speculated that a figure for 2035 would be significantly less ambitious than a 2040 target.

Liese acknowledged the EU has to come up with a target for 2035, which should happen under a Polish presidency and Liese backs the Polish argument that the EU should not wait for an agreement on the 2040 target to derive a 2035 goal, arguing that discussions for 2035 and 2040 should be separate.

Update on EU's 2040 Target: European Parliament EPP Party MEP Peter Liese has indicated that the EPP cannot currently support a 2040 climate target to cut 90% of emissions as recommended by the European Commission.
