Just before Christmas, I got a puppy. Her name is Minerva, and we call her *Minnie. I'm still learning how to understand her. Me: Do you need to go outside? Do you need to go outside, little baby? Do you need to do a poo? Do you need to do a widdle piddle? Minnie: Arf! *I just call her "little baby" most of the time. I'm also realizing I can't turn off the baby talk now. Nobody tells you about that.

I got so lucky with my first puppy. Her wonderful foster parents had her completely house-trained by the time we adopted her, so taking her outside for potty time has been pretty easy. I've got the puppy poopy routine pretty much down, now. Me, putting on my coat: Let's see... I got the little poopy bags, puppy treats for bribes, jacket, scarf, phone… I think that's everything… Oh yes! And my passport.

I had been carrying around my passport for a while, but I knew it didn't matter. This is wrong. Nobody is required to carry around their papers. I became a US citizen when I was seven. Since I was born in a refugee camp, I was stateless. The US is the only nation where I've ever held citizenship. It's the only passport I've ever had, and it still felt important. Protective. I would hold it in my pocket like a talisman, like it might ward off ghosts or something. But I realized I was holding onto it basically out of superstition. ICE will pick up anybody. I know that. So I tucked my passport away. And I largely avoid leaving my house.

I live a few blocks just South of George Floyd Square. I was in the neighborhood for that, too. And all the neighbors came together to protect each other. We're already organized. We'll do our best to get through this. Me, to my dog: I hope I can take you for a walk someday soon. Won't that be nice, little baby?

If I want to impart anything to anyone who reads this: Don’t give up on the things and people you love. Loving someone or something is worth it. Life is a school and a gift. We’re here to be present and we’re here to learn.
Now, make sure you drink some water and stay safe loves!

I’ve had some small but significant victories this past year. One I don’t mind sharing was submitting some work to a zine contest. I didn’t win, but I’m happy that I completed it. Other victories involved me putting myself out there and standing up for myself. Not an easy thing to do, but I did it.

Life is difficult in this economy, but I’m taking it one day at a time. The orangutan in office will continue to throw shit on everything, but I absolutely refuse to let it dampen my spirits. In fact, I’m going to let my hardships fuel me to create more. Even if it’s out of pure spite! XD

For example, I’m in a place of deconstruction my old stories from childhood and rewriting them anew. As I’ve deconstructed my old beliefs, it’s given me new life to these stories. In a way, I’m grateful for the journey I’ve gone through as I wouldn’t have changed otherwise.

I learned I’m a chronic over sharer, and in order to let go of old habits and embrace change I’ve started being more private (especially online). However, even when I do share my life, I’m being more intentional about the things I share.

Even my previous plurality has changed as my mind has fused back together. This isn’t a path I recommend for everyone. It happened all on its own. But this is a period of my life that has changed me and I will remember from here on out.

My life has been an ongoing lesson of things falling apart and then coming back together new. From the deconstruction of my previous religion to embracing my own spiritual path, to my marriage ending and a new relationship beginning, to leaving jobs and gaining jobs…

A lot has happened this past year, and I want to keep it brief. My marriage/relationship of over a decade ended on mutual terms. I’m currently in a new relationship, and exploring my life anew. Such is the echo of my life lessons.
