"..it’s clear that @zackpolanski.bsky.social is a *much* more effective public speaker than Starmer, Badenoch or Davey, and possibly on a par (albeit very differently) to Farage.

It’s no wonder Labour are privately pretty worried about possible losses to the Greens."

We're out protesting today alongside other Disabled-led organisations to say NO to the Assisted Dying Bill.

With the Government pushing through some of the worst disability benefit cuts we've ever seen, we cannot afford to place our lives in the hands of such an ableist society.

ACCESS COHORT HACKNEY is a group of Disabled residents and allies committed to ensuring accessibility, inclusion, and equality in our borough. We are reaching out to formally introduce ourselves and to express our collective concern regarding the need for consistent implementation of reasonable adjustments for Disabled people across Hackney Council services.

Under the Equality Act 2010, public bodies like local councils have a legal duty to anticipate and provide reasonable adjustments to ensure Disabled people are not put at a disadvantage. However, we have found that requests for basic adjustments, such as receiving letters in large print, accessible formats, or alternative communication methods, are often overlooked or inconsistently applied.

We’d love you to join us online to talk about the barriers you experience when accessing council services in Hackney. We will meet with Deaf and Disabled People’s Organizations (DDPO) in Hackney, allies and council councillors on Monday 23rd of June 2025 from 12PM to 2PM with breaks. To join the event, please register attendance on the following link

https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/rMtim-XLR2i2AYVCMWcaIg

At this online event we want to initiate a conversation about accessibility between residents and Hackney council services.

1. Ensure a clear and consistent system is in place for Disabled residents to request and receive reasonable adjustments.

2. Implement a flagging system across all departments to make sure that once an adjustment is requested, it is remembered and respected in future communications.

3. Train all front-line staff and officers on the rights of Disabled people and the council’s duties under the Equality Act, based in the Social Model of Disability by Inclusion London.

4. Engage with Access Cohort Hackney and local Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisations (DDPOs) to co-produce accessible policies and practices.

We look forward to meeting you!

Disability Rights UK is shocked and appalled at the Government’s intended cuts to the benefits that Disabled people rely upon. Narrowing eligibility for Personal Independence Payment and reducing the health component of Universal Credit, will drive millions of Disabled people into even deeper poverty.

The Government is demonising and punishing Disabled people for the economic failures of successive governments. Why isn’t it looking to the rich, to plug its funding gap?

This is a very distressing time for Disabled people who could be impacted by the proposed changes. We will do everything we can to fight them and as part of the Disabled people’s movement, will make our voices heard.
