The critic who hated "Taxi Driver" the most had to be Tom Sullivan, who concluded his review with the most blistering insult possible for Martin Scorsese.

A half-century later, that remark has backfired ...

At the Cannes Film Festival, the jury president broke with tradition by openly denouncing Scorsese's film.

Taxi Driver won the Palme d'Or anyway.

That jury president was Tennessee Williams, who provoked similar outrage throughout his entire writing career. Funny how things change.

Some critics championed it: The New Yorker's Pauline Kael, especially. But also Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times.

Vincent Canby in The New York Times bunted: he couldn't decide if it was good or bad.
