So the commentary on "elites" isn't wrong, and there truly is something horrible about a system that can create hyper-powerful ultra-predators and allow them to operate with impunity. But a lot of people you know have been hurt by predators a lot less powerful than Epstein. They also matter.

The way this works is that, even if men DON'T have the power to subjugate other men or hoard vast wealth, they can console themselves by sexually violating women and children. That's what patriarchy is. It's the promise that even if a man doesn't rule the world, he's the oppressor at home.

It's really frustrating, as someone who's written about sexual violence for two decades -- always being dismissed as too sensitive, as selfish, as not "really" political -- to have a set of documents which truly show how rape culture runs our world, and ONLY have it parsed as a comment on class.

Look: Capitalism allows a few people to concentrate power and wealth to the extent that even ONE of them hating his trans kid has the potential to ruin millions of lives. That's terrifying. But patriarchy, which teaches sexual violence as an expression of power, is not exclusive to billionaires.
