As electric bills rise, evidence mounts that data centers share blame. States feel pressure to act Amid rising electric bills, states are under pressure to insulate regular household and business ratepayers from the costs of feeding Big Tech’s energy-hungry data centers.

Has your power bill gone up?

ChatGPT might be part of why.

I mostly love living on the Pacific coast, but I do miss being able to drive on over to Memphis or Minneapolis or Chicago whenever I have a long weekend. (Having previously lived in Arkansas, Iowa, and Indiana.)

The awkward thing about appearing absorbed in a book while you drink on the patio is the couple at the next table thinks having a straight-up argument is cool.

Starting to get extremely alarmed about how little folks seem to know about how alphabetizing works? (I recognize, having spent much of my time as, essentially, a file clerk, I had a LOT of practice, but)

If I have to explain to you why it's a bad idea to use a machine that makes shit up 15-80% of the time AND destroys the environment AND contributes to rising fascism and genocide AND puts brilliant skillful creatives out of work by stealing their work, then we're already speaking different languages

There are many things to love about #TheNakedGun2025, but Liam Neeson gravely waxing rhapsodic about #BuffyTheVampireSlayer is at the top of my personal list.

I'm not saying I believe that Trump is the antichrist. I'm saying that he matches all the descriptions I've ever heard from evangelicals about what they think the antichrist would be, and they haven't apparently noticed.

I just wish weird psychosexual obsessions functioned the way they used to. 19th century weirdos aiming to end masturbation made us both a breakfast cereal and a tasty cracker. That NEVER happens today. Nobody tries to criminalize IUDs and accidentally invents a new kind of Milano.

Man, the plethora of resume templates available is NOT doing people any favors in terms of creating cohesive and logical documents.

I enjoyed #Ironheart, but it's still hard to escape the knowledge that a lot of the issues would have been solved if Wakanda was funding some research centers outside of Oakland? (Just like Pepper Potts should be sending a salary to every single Avenger.)

We have not had free and fair elections in this country. We have always had some people who had to vote on extremely hard mode in some places of this country.

Expecting people to wait in line 9 hours *is* a form of poll tax.

Chatbots in the classroom: how AI is reshaping higher education While institutions grapple with the pace of change, technology companies are moving quickly to offer custom learning products

β€œBut multiple students the FT spoke to, who asked to remain anonymous, also worry about being perceived negatively as the AI generation. One of them expressed anxiety about being β€˜guinea pigs’ for the AI pilots taking place before the impact of the technology on learning is fully known.”

People who believe that the solution to societal inequality is take away from people who have, rather than give to people who need, are not fighting the same fight that I am. There is a major ethical gap between wanting abundance for everyone and seeing suffering as a virtue.

The right-wing backlash against #Superman has happened before.

Here’s my @vanityfair.com report w/ the full history β€”starting with April 1940, when the official SS newspaper attacked the comic book hero & its creators.

Plus, that time Superman fought the KKK…

How do the ways an LMS shows things like deadlines and grading seem inflexible to students, and how can we make it feel friendlier? And how do admins make this more possible for instructors to facilitate?

And, as Vidali points out, it means that students don't necessarily lose out if they miss a week of class due to quarantine or whatever. Shearer wants 20 activities per concept, so there's a bit of built-in redundancy AND allows for variation in engagement.

The course that Shearer is describing is more of a pool of resources so if, for example, someone needed a sub for a couple of weeks, the sub could pull from the modules, but wouldn't have to develop or interrupt a whole project timeline.
