Given the chance that Woakes's test career might be done, given the timing of this injury, it would be really quite something for him to get England over the line, but it feels so far away now.

17 now feels like 400

19 runs feels like it might as well be 100 right now.

It's not even a particularly good list of c21 us shows. Without really giving it much thought I'd rate both Parks and Recreation and Veronica Mars as some of the best TV I've watched in the last decade or two (and certainly far superior to GoT), but I guess comedies with female leads ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ

It's quite impressive that the AI manages to identify the dates and amounts on the receipts, and has a fair whack at identifying eg train tickets. Ultimately it's taken me somewhat longer to submit an expense claim than doing it all by hand though, and I'm less confident it's 100% accurate.

Today I think is the end of the uni's financial year means it's been the final day for a whole host of colleagues who've taken "voluntary" redundancy. Very unsettling experience.

Day two of using the accounting system's new AI to accelerate my expenses claim. Currently correcting all the items it thinks were from Stavanger or Oslo.

Yeah, but they saved The Expanse, so I'm conflicted.

I check the gas hobs are all off. No idea why: they've never not been.

In autumn the evenings, when the glittering sun sinks close to the edge of the hills and the crows fly back to their nests in threes and fours and twos; more charming still is a file of wild geese, like specks in the distant sky.

I'm mostly with you, and as you say the alternatives are worse. But I can understand how I might feel negative about them being introduced to a rural landscape I've lived with my whole life. Also, up close I find them scarily big and a bit menacing. They remind me of the 80s show The Tripods.

I agree, although I remember reading something about presidential golfing years ago, and as I recall it, plenty of them did similar (Clinton for example, iirc).

The girl has pivoted hard into K-Pop Demon Hunters. We might be word perfect on the script by the end of the summer.

For me, the most productive have always been limited groups of people with pre-circulated *short* papers and creative ways of them discussing them (eg you present someone else's paper). Is that a workshop rather than a conference, I dunno.

25.07.2025 17:29 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 11    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I went to a workshop/conference funded by Volkswagen something or other, and held in the Schloss Herrenhausen in Hanover. That was pretty close to optimal.

Otherwise, the IIAS in Leiden hosted one in the local museum of antiquities. That was a fantastic venue, also.

(British?) universities have just the most amazing ability to take something seemingly simple and turn it into an incomprehensible bureaucratic nightmare.

We bottled just over half of the honey last night, that comes out at about 14lbs. So we should have more then 20 by the time we're done, maybe 25.

As someone once said, the midsomer detective inspector is awfully confident for a policeman who allows murderers to commit at least two more crimes before being caught every time.

When I open a new tab on my phone, I quite often get articles from the Oxford Mail, and I admire the way they seem to have stuck tenaciously to the "Oxford university student Emma Watson" bit.

We extracted 10 frames worth of honey over the weekend, and it's been settling before putting into jars tomorrow. Rough calc suggests there's ~10 litres of it, which the internet tells me might be 30 lbs.

I don't really know what hyrox is, but whatever has led the algorithm to advertise it to me seems deeply misguided.

Full toss hits me on the ankle maybe outside off stump. Big appeal, not out.
Middled the forward defence and it rockets back to the bowler
Thought I could pick the spinner's quicker ball. Cannot in fact pick it. Just about dig it out.

Some of my many dot balls:
Extravagant leave
No one is quite sure if it's a leave or a miss
Ball gets lodged in my pad and I have to curtsey to let it out
Ball rolls back towards the stumps and I have to nudge it away, slip appeals for obstruction
Ball goes nowhere, I ask permission to pick it up

The boy played a nice cameo in a pretty epic chase for the thirds yesterday, I ground out 8* in about a gazillion balls during a proper batting collapse for the seconds.

It was also very hot.

Finally, everyone gets lost in Tokyo/shibuya/Shinjuku/Osaka stations. Don't sweat it.

Similar but on a bigger scale, if you can find time to go beyond the big three/four cities, you'll be rewarded. My personal favourite: islands of the seto sea, but pretty much everywhere.

This site is Japanese only, but random browsing might give some indication:

Crowds seem to be very very concentrated in a few places, so in Kyoto for example, Arashiyama/Fushimi Inari/Nanzenji/Golden Temple. By contrast, places that are equally historic/gorgeous (we found Tofukuji/Myozenji/Daitokuji) are much quieter.

I would be tempted to skip sights 1-5 and go to 6-10+
