When you compare this graph with the one for ages 55-64 you can see they are very similar to each other. Also they are not very different from graphs for the same age group in other countries, the lines are a little higher but compared with the younger we can see that for these age groups the United States death rates are similar to the rest of the economically developed world. The thing you will not find for other countries that I have included here are differences by state equivalents, if they have them, that show differences. As far as I can find I am the only researcher who who has looked at political party effects on death rates.
Look at the text for the second map; for the data used to make this graph.

Exclusive: a Nature analysis signals the beginnings of a US science brain drain
A trawl of job views and application data suggests jobseekers are looking abroad as the Trump administrationβs cuts to science take hold.
π§ͺ Is a US science brain drain beginning? Nature data reveals a 32% jump in US scientists applying abroad (Q1 2025) amidst funding cuts. Interest in Canada, Europe, and Asia is up; interest in US jobs is down.

US earthquake safety relies on federal employeesβ expertise
The US experiences violent earthquakes, but the damage and death toll is much lower than in many countries because of the work of federal seismologists and engineers.
I was proud to be a federal scientist at the USGS for 33 years. "Earth science in the public service" meant I could focus on creating and explaining science for public officials and providing public education, not just educating students at one university. theconversation.com/us-earthquak...

Screenshot of two posts by at-maxkozlov.bsky with the text:
Per source, NIH has been instructed to hold off from issuing ALL awards to Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, Brown, and Northwestern (including med schools)
Agency staff have also been instructed to not speak about this funding freeze to grantees and applicants
For reference, these five institutions together received ~$1.7 billion of NIH funding in 2024, or nearly 5% of the entire agency budget for research done outside of NIH's campus
βthese five institutionsβ and βnearly 5% of the entire agency budgetβ are highlighted in yellow
The funding cuts to science are obviously catastrophic, but this really illustrates how unfair research funding is in the first place π§ͺ

Updates on the M7.7 Myanmar earthquake
An unusually long, possibly supershear rupture
π§ͺβοΈ
Two days after the M7.7 earthquake in Myanmar, what have we learned?
Rapid seismological analyses shared by scientists suggest that the rupture was both longer and faster than expected - two factors that could have increased damage.

If you had 101, that step wonβt be traumatic. Iβve not taught historical in yrs; I donβt know the current best text, but whatever is used at your local college would be a place to start.
