That's mostly because anybody with the sense god gave the common turnip would understand that changing the text of the constitution was going to go viral. Granted that's very much assuming facts not in evidence. But at this point I'm wonder what changes were made that we haven't noticed.

I don't think they were trying to scrub the text of the constitution. I think they were trying to scrub the annotations and the constitution page was collateral damage. Much like an arsonist who manages to light his car on fire in the process.

More likely is that somebody deliberately deleted the sections from the annotations without realizing that would also flow to the constitution page. But that's not a coding error.

Absent a compelling details about exactly what happened, I'm not buying the coding error explanation.

Based on the way the markup was structed and how little it changed from when it was correct I this doesn't make a great deal of sense as an explanation. The constitution isn't that long. There aren't 100 sections in then entire document. And the missing sections are near the beginning.

People are framing this as "The constitution text got altered and the annotations were removed" but I think it may be more accurate to say "The annotations got removed and the constitution text got altered". If they'd stuck to the former it might have flown under the radar.

I think it might be enlightening to see where similar discussion has been removed from legal analysis pages. I think is may be a more pervasive change and the constitution page is what got noticed because it's so glaring.

Yeah. There was a process to eliminate politically verboten discussion -- such as the President is not allowed to take bribes -- from government websites. It's possible somebody ran a script without realizing it was going to hit contexts that would going backfire. But that's still malice.

There are signs that the markup is generated from a non html source document, including some sloppy errors. But comparing to the copy on the Wayback machine there aren't any structural changes. Nothing that suggests an overhaul that would produce "coding errors".

Sufficiently advanced stupidity is indistinguishable from malice.
