and childishness
of these times is overwhelming
I hear friends explain
that the regions of the brain
Covid damages
control empathy and compassion,
and I fear Covid
has damaged our empathy,
and I also fear Covid
revealed
how damaged our empathy
has always been.

As I sit at my desk
I think of the headline
“Scientists have been studying
remote work for 4 years
and have reached
a very clear conclusion:
“Working from home
makes us thrive””
yes, as I sit here,
listening to my coworkers
coughing and sniffling
I keep thinking of that headline.

I don't know what pathogen will cause the next pandemic - Disease X - but what I do know is that the combination of the immune dysregulation effect of SARS-CoV-2 and the political legacy of our response to Covid means this pandemic makes us much more vulnerable to the next one.

and though I am confident
(I am fairly confident)
that I am still alive,

And the complete lack of medical staff in hospitals and clinics wearing masks, at least in the USA, is f*cking EXHAUSTING.
I have to PLEAD with staff to mask around my family member with a 30% ejection fraction and diabetes to wear a mask.
I prefer the 3M Vflex.

As we discussed
the efficacy of marches
the old punk told me
not to overlook
the importance
of setting an example:
by standing up,
by speaking out,
you are showing others
that they can do the same,
which, the old punk added,
is also a good reason
to keep wearing a mask.

Do not worry
if you do not get

or show or book
people are discussing,
remember:
it’s find to say
“this is not for me”
and move on,
worry less about
how you don’t get
this or that
new cultural work,
worry instead
about how you keep getting
the new Covid variants.

My sister sent me a picture
of a good sign she saw
at the march she attended,
and as I looked
back and forth
from the placard
to the masked face
of the person carrying it,
I agreed
that the sign was good
though the even better sign
was that the person carrying it
wore a mask.

Children in schools, old people in care homes, and patients in hospitals are being constantly exposed to the life-threatening danger of Covid-19. The human community is failing in its moral obligation to maintain essential safety for those who are most in need of being shielded from harm.

that the march is over,
remember:
there is more
to protecting each other
than just carrying a sign,
so if you are wondering
what to do next:
wear a mask,
yes, we must do more than that
to protect each other
but it’s still something.

Every time I see pictures like this at infectious disease events, I wonder how there are no masks or other precautions visible.
The disconnect between what is studied and the everyday life of the people studying the same is as disappointing as it is enduring.

By the way…

Five years is nothing.

Pandemics and many epidemic and endemic diseases wreak their damage over decades…

Our short concentration span is a problem.

Before I give up masking in public spaces, those spaces will have publicly available air quality monitoring, or obvious evidence of large-scale HEPA filtration.

We all experienced "trauma" in the early days of the ongoing pandemic of Covid-19, some more than others. Healthcare workers have no special excuse for refusing to wear respirator masks. They have chosen to abandon fundamental ethics, and should be judged accordingly.
