Revisiting Grief Another family death opens old wounds and avenues for new healing.

Haven’t visited in a while and curious. How do you all think about (or avoid thinking about) grief? open.substack.com/pub/caregivi...

truly shocked that a preening buffoon with enough self-regard to produce two memoirs before the age of 40 believes that being being fat or overweight is a moral failure and that one must engage in cleansing struggle to become healthy.

The Resistance Is Dead. Long Live the Resistance? The women who set out to bury Donald Trump are doing things differently now.

As of this morning, we’re close to 9000 people who’ve signed up to run for office since EDay.

Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.

Needs to be a country wide push to make public housing, banking, healthcare, transit, postal service, education, and the arts alongside it. A wholesale rebranding of the commons outside of them being a place for public branding.

This right here.

As experts like @katharinehayhoe.com and others have pointed out, the knowledge deficit model simply does not work.

COVID, climate change, Jan 6, it doesn't matter.

This should be a foundational piece of knowledge for any academic, advocacy, and journalistic work.

The US Media Is Ignoring Israel’s Campaign to Kill Palestinian Journalists Israel is trying to snuff out journalism in Gaza. This should be a sound-the-alarm, all-hands-on-deck moment for anyone who professes to support reporters and the work that they do.

The deafening silence of the US media establishment as Israel carries out the most sustained attack on journalism in modern history should be a source of lasting shame. I wrote about it for @thenation.com www.thenation.com/article/soci...

White House Said to Delay Decision on Enormous Natural Gas Export Terminal Before deciding whether to approve it, the Energy Department will analyze the climate impacts of CP2, one of 17 proposed LNG export terminals.

Huge news! The White House is delaying the approval of a massive LNG terminal and evaluating the others based on the latest climate science. This is a massive win for people and the planet. Great decision from President Biden!

Food Not Bombs trial rescheduled after too many jurors objected to $500 fine for feeding homeless Roughly 90 tickets have been issued since March to volunteers with the loosely organized Food Not Bombs, which serves meals to people in need.

This is an amazing story. Houston criminalized feeding the homeless, Food not Bombs continued to do so, the city has ticketed them dozens of times and occasionally arrested members but hasn’t been able to get a single conviction. www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston...

Tucker Carlson clip from 2018 where he ranted against diversity

β€œRhetorically, our side is getting absolutely murdered,” Mr. Klingenstein wrote to Dr. Yenor and another Claremont official. β€œWe have not even come up with an agreed-on name for the enemy.”

One problem, Dr. Yenor reported to his colleagues, was that many lawmakers were reluctant to take on anything called β€œdiversity and inclusion.” Terms like β€œdiversity,” he argued, needed to be saddled with more negative connotations.

β€œI obviously think social justice is what we should call it,” he wrote. β€œWe should use the term that is most likely to stigmatize the movement that is accurate and arises from common life.” While nobody wanted to seem in favor of discrimination, he argued, β€œsocial justice” could be β€œstigmatized so that when people hear it they can act on their suspicions.”

Wild thing about that NYT piece is how it shows these guys taking some of the most racist Tucker Carlson segments from three years earlier and successfully making them mainstream GOP positions.

β€˜America Is Under Attack’: Inside the Anti-D.E.I. Crusade The backlash against β€œwokeism” has led a growing number of states to ban D.E.I. programs at public universities. Thousands of emails and other documents reveal the playbook β€” and grievances β€” ...

Yes, it leaves out the next iteration in which the Times itself certainly played a role, but this is a pretty good story about old-fashioned white supremacist and patriarchal thinkers deliberately laundering their ideas into public life as anti β€œwoke” and anti β€œDEI” www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

The NYT did five dozen stories on the president of Harvard who was *not* a court-determined rapist so we should probably see a few more on this?

Or does it not count because Trump’s rape victim went to a state school? Is the story beneath them?

The question also comes up of how much this story was shaped by Harvard alums working as reporters, editors, and executive leadership at the NYTimes. The answer is quite a bit, as @davidjroth.bsky.social outlines in this great article.
