Wake up. Make breakfast. Do email. Watch a murder. Go to a party for a 5 year old. Laugh with my daughter. See a different angle of that murder. Hear govt officials slander the victim. Play Barbies with my kid. Feed her dinner. Tear up at that victim reading last honors to a vet. Put kid to bed. USA

ICE has kidnapped so many people from their cars that the city had to put out this statement. Let that sink in.

The scale of the protests in Iran are absolutely unbelievable. Hard to quantify, but I've seen some speculation that this uprising is more significant than the 2023 protests (themselves the largest challenge to the regime since it came into power in '79.)

I’ve just discovered #DuvetKnowItsChristmas, where people share the funny/awkward/downright strange sleeping situations they find themselves in while visiting family. While I’m comfortably in my own home this year, when I visit my parents in their teeny retirement cottage, my bed looks like this 🤣

JAMES MERRILL
CHRISTMAS TREE
From loes torn hamin Had been fed, looked after, kept still, Meant, I knew— of course I knew - That it would be only a matter of weeks,
That there was nothing more to do. Warmly they took me in, made much of me,
The point from the start was to keep my spirits up. I could assent to that. For honestly, It did help to be wound in jewels, to send Their colors flashing forth from vents in the deep
Fragrant sables that cloaked me head to foot. Over me then they wove a spell of shining —
Purple and silver chains, eavesdripping tinsel, Amulets, milagros: software of silver,
A heart, a little girl, a Model T Two staring eyes. Then angels, trumpets, BUD and BEA (The children's names) in clownlike capitals, Somewhere a music box whose tiny song
Played and replayed I ended before long By loving. And in shadow behind me, a primitive IV To keep the show going. Yes, yes, what lay ahead
Was clear: the stripping, the cold street, my chemicals
Plowed back into the Earth for lives to come — No doubt a blessing, a harvest, but one that doesn't bear,
Now or ever, dwelling upon. To have grown so thin.
Needles and bone. The little boy's hands meeting
About my spine. The mother's voice: Holding up wonderfully!
No dread. No bitterness. The end beginning. Today's
Dusk room aglow For the last time
With candlelight. Faces love-lit,
Gifts underfoot.
Still to be so poised, so
Receptive. Still to recall, to praise.
James Merril’s poem “Christmas Tree,” written while he was dying of AIDS. 1995.

We should frame the drive behind AI music and art not as “making things” but to “see or hear things.” The “creativity” questions are entirely concerns about consumption, and the market impact of individualizing products to a single consumer’s personal desires rather than engaging with other people.

One argument I used to make to my students about why it was important to learn history (and historical thinking) is that someone was always going to be trying to tell you things were natural or had always been this way and that you needed to be able to see that as an exercise of power.

That this is intimately tied to the West African coups and the Trump II National Security Strategy is perhaps not so obvious but nonetheless fundamental, as they function as a tragedy in three acts.
Act I is the extractivism in both raw materials and skills that impoverishes the Global South.

Addendum:
The fact that this is coming from a Labour govt, with no consideration of the implications for labor in the countries of origin, illustrates how vacuous and self-absorbed social democratic politics in the US and Western Europe have become.

A theory about vibes:
Human beings are deeply social creatures. Our need for a legible social order is rooted almost as deeply in our brainstem as our need for basic physical security. We need -- not want, need -- to understand who's in charge, who are allies, who are enemies, *how things work*.

Anyway, this turned into a ramble, but the whole point is that I think a lot of the discontent currently expressed in economic terms is only expressed that way because those are the only terms available. Taking it too literally & responding technocratically is a mistake. Deeper shit is afoot. </fin>

In the end, we no longer operate in a marketplace of ideas.
Platforms run a marketplace of feeling, where attention, not evidence, decides what rises. Emotional charge beats truth every time. Politics adapts to that logic, producing hollow performances instead of functional decisions.
