We had an ICE scare yesterday and even though we’re afraid of the repercussions of being vocal, we feel that it’s also important to inform people that this is right at our front door. ICE is not some far away boogeyman. They are here right now, spreading fear in our community.
We’re so grateful to our entire staff and their bravery. They did the right things and couldn’t have dealt with this situation in a better way. We are grateful to our community activists that came to support us from @miracmn @litosonlake and Monarcha. We hope that if you find yourself in the same situation, that you find these resources helpful. Peace and take care of each other ❤️

is there anything more 2025-coded than “white” being the pantone color of the year

December: Rest, Recovery, and Review
I submitted final grades for Fall Term on Tuesday evening, which means Fall Term is now, officially, complete! It has been a doozy of a term, as I mentioned in my last couple of blog posts. I worked 6-7 days a week for the better part of a month -- something I normally try very hard to avoid, as it's a fast track to burnout. The last week of classes, and reading days, were extremely chaotic for a variety of reasons. While there were many things I enjoyed about the term (chief among them, my students, who were amazing and engaged and just all around fun people to hang out with 2-3 times a week), I was glad to see the term come to a close.

it's wild how the positive use cases are like "save 5 minutes reading a long doc" and "write a generic email faster" and the negative use cases are "get encouraged to dive deeper in psychosis, misogyny, or suicidal thoughts" and we're still on the fence about overall value

Yes, the push to complete grading and submit final grades is always grueling, but I will ALWAYS take the time to write personal messages to my students as part of their final project feedback, thanking them for specific contributions to the class community. My favorite part of the process!

I know it's too easy to grow numb to the constant flood of bigotry that comes out of his mouth but it does seem morally important you don't allow yourself or anyone else to become desensitized to this vile racism as a normal part of our politics

Click through and read the assignment feedback, which was constructive, kind, and frankly very gentle. Suspending the instructor over this is a deranged overreaction in support of a clearly bad faith student, and the university choosing this action is once again another stain on higher education.

Look, every single “deal” reached by a university with the Trump administration is a moral stain that will be seen with deep embarrassment once we’re through this. But for Northwestern to do this now, when the administration is visibly weakened, is even more shameful and inexcusable.

I just don’t see how we can pretend even for a moment that anything involving our federal government is remotely normal when the president is covering up his involvement in a child sex trafficking ring. Like, what are we doing here

Really difficult to overstate the fury one should feel that the GOP and institutions like the New York Times went all in on transphobia as some mortal threat to women and girls while covering up something like this.

"This could take down Democrats, too."
I know. And I frankly wouldn't give even an itty bitty damn if it implicated every Democratic man in Congress, every Democratic hopeful for 2028 and every Democrat who has even thought about running for office.
Down with the sex predators, wherever they are.

Can we circle back to the part where the NY Times never disclosed that they have incriminating information on Donald Trump from sent by Epstein that's been sitting on their email servers for nearly a decade?

My takeaway from every new Epstein revelation is that some powerful people victimized many powerless young women, many more knew, some actively enabled it--and we're still being told that MeToo and accountability for sexual violence have gone too far

Dems backed Trump into a corner where he’s advocating for starving Americans and hemorrhaging support. If they vote to let him off the hook in exchange for nothing it’s a cataclysmic failure. I know people are in pain but insulating Republicans from political consequences is not the answer.

Know this, @schumer.senate.gov — if you cave, we will not rest until you are primaried and wrested from your seat. When kids on SNAP aren’t being fed, we’re even more hungry for justice. New York has shown you the people’s power just days ago. You *could* join with us, still, and do the right thing.

'Feed the hungry' is one of the basic, fundamental, direct-order-from-Jesus, tenets of being a Christian, and it's not 'feed the hungry when it's politically expedient to do so or advances your wider agenda'.
You'd think the party full of people claiming to be guided by their faith would be on this

Showing up messy
Tuesday was one of those days where I woke up early to work before heading to work, then worked all day with very few breaks and then came home to do....yep, more work. Teaching, class prep, grading, meetings, putting out fires, talking to students, emails, just a relentless stream of work. I shut my laptop after 10pm and headed straight for bed, knowing I'd need to be up at 5am to start the whole cycle over again. When I got in to work Wednesday morning, I sat down, opened my laptop to prep for the morning's meetings and outline my plan for my junior seminar (the class I didn't prep the day before)....and just couldn't.

It was a rejection of the entire administration and Dems should see this as a signal to become an actual opposition party. On everything. You don't stop the shutdown. You don't approve another appointee. You do nothing at all. The voters saved you, not the other way around. LEARN TO LEAD.
