Holidays are great for escaping reality. But you can never escape laundry.

Farewell Kobe! Thanks @globias.bsky.social , I've had a great time, met some cool people, caught up with old friends, had some productive discussions, drank some sake. What more could you want from a conference?

Bought a new fountain pen and ink, but made the strategic mistake of accepting the offer of doing it duty free. Now I can't use it until I get home!

Still get kind of nervous when I'm travelling solo. But I got here, and I got ramen.

I feel so grown-up using try/except and actually catching errors and dealing with them. Of course my solution causes another error. It's errors all the way down.

My house is about to be invaded by ten kids between the ages of ten and thirteen.

I'm tired in advance.

I leave for Japan in exactly one week. I feel like I have not given this enough thought.

My youngest got sent home from school because he was "feeling unwell". I'm working from home today and now he's here. I wonder if I can convince him annotate a cellpose model for me....

I think the issue is I start from the half-way point. Our HPC has a module system for things like CUDA where I can load and unload versions at will. In this case I had the correct CUDA for the version of pytorch but the wrong cuDNN. Once I loaded the correct one all went smoothly.

I haven't. Have had a play with uv but not for this project. Somewhat limited by what's permissable on our HPC. Thankfully we do have modules that allow for relatively easy loading and unloading of packages.

Just had to make sure I had the right ones loaded.

I wish, just ONE time, that I could install cuda, cudnn, and pytorch, without it taking me 15 attempts and core dumps

Hard not to feel old when things I owned are in literal museum displays. I played the original on a Mac classic after school while my Mum was in staff meetings. I honestly believe that it is at least partially the reason I ended up where I am today - but that's a long story.

Ok nothing got more responses than a targeted email to a core facility's user list. If you work in a microscopy core I'd love it if you could advertise this to your users. There's a blog-post with info too ausbias.org/blog/2025/10...

Lisa Simpson after eating an Indian curry: "I can see through time"

After a pretty ordinary week (to put it mildly) decided to go hard on the hot sauce with Friday pizza night. I may have over done it.

Overwhelming response so far! Both responders have been very enlightening.

Help me out microscopy colleagues, there's nothing sadder than an analyst without data!

This is the only place I've ever felt relaxed on a family holiday.

Red blood cells are analysed inside a lab-on-a-chip, a tiny device that condenses the complexity of a lab into postage-stamp size. Researchers are using these to tackle malaria with speed and precision.
