Complete ban on bee killing pesticides moves forward • Government sets out plans to end the use of toxic neonicotinoid pesticides that threaten vital pollinators

BBKA President Stephen Barnes reacted to the announcement saying: "The BBKA welcomes the decision". Stephen expressed sympathy with farmers.

A honey bee with propolis that she has gathered in her pollen baskets. She will need help from her sisters to remove it.

As we use mesh floors we can use the camera looking up from underneath. It shows exactly where the cluster is and how large the cluster/colony is. There are a large number of dead bees on the floor in the picture, usually they would keep the floors clear so worth making a note of that for later.

The one used here is a small FLIR one thermal imaging camera unit which clips onto a smartphone. Works well enough for us. It doesn’t really alter what we do but it is just another bit of information like hefting your hives.

Beyond the Basic Examination – The George Knight’s Award was awarded to the North Shropshire Beekeepers' Association as the area association whose members made the most effort and progress overall in the British Beekeeping Associations examinations and assessments for the year 2023

Checking the bees in cold weather without opening or touching the hive, using a thermal camera. They are generating plenty of warmth in their winter cluster.

The Association runs a 'Taster in Beekeeping' course each year at Tilstock Village Hall, Shropshire, for people interested in taking their first steps with keeping bees. The 2025 course at Tilstock Village Hall will be over the weekend of the 26th and 27th of April
