The beauty of framing such an endeavor around assignment projects versus around strictly fundamentals is that all skill levels can jump in and feedback can be tailored to individual levels and goals. Also it’s more fun. Play is at the center of my teaching philosophy.

Two 4-week projects off the top could be Character Development where we just do deep dives on our own character design and stories, and Animation Dance Party where we create looping character clips fully realized. Longer projects could be The Animated Shot where we create one shot start to finish.

What would be important and useful and inspiring to you in such an online class? What’s the biggest draw that might get you to sign up for one?

Again the value in this would be that it replicates some of the things that are actually useful in the art school experience that are lacking from just tutorials. I’ve taken a lot of online courses and directed a BFA animation program also so I’m close to the student experience.

I remember someone mentioning the “pied piper” approach to teaching when they were reviewing me. This could be the key, to demonstrate and teach projects I want to do and lead a group who wants to join in making their own. People could jump into whichever projects they like.

Ideally there would be multiple subjects and intro/fundamentals courses plus more advanced project based courses. But to start out with something fun (and maybe it is the actual key to this) I’m thinking the test run should be 4-week long project assignments.

Back to brainstorming about a creative online school. The value that it would bring for a small price would be structured scheduled projects, individual feedback, peer pressure (positive)/community, learning and practice. Also the assignments would be free if you wanted to self-learn.

Hey I think you are correct! Looks like a Thomson's or Soaptree Yucca from those photos on that site you linked. And that website says they survive winter temps. Nice! I see those Adam's Needle Yuccas around here in Philly, but never thought a big tall one could grow here (or South Jersey) before.

I’ll need to ramp it up over a few trial semesters. Maybe enroll a smattering of you cool test art people who love to live on the bleeding edge this fall. Do a weird class. Establish some community. Create some structure and motivation. See old students again!

Welp, I guess I’ll have to open my own creative cartooning, animation, and design school. I’ll grant degrees in kicking ass.
