This weekend, DHS targeted and seized Mahmoud Khalil as punishment for his political speech, and indicated that they are revoking his green card. They have since handed him over to ICE where he is being detained — his location unknown — and held for deportation without due process. This is what fascist governments do, and it will not stop here. This extreme escalation is the test case; the Trump/Musk administration is trying to see how far they can go without public outrage and legal checks on their power. Now is the moment to speak out and oppose this as fiercely and loudly as possible.

Antisemitism in its late 19th century nationalist formulation is not only a hatred of Jews, but a particular belief about rootless internationalists and migration as a threat to the stability of hard national borders and identities. It can thus be structurally appealing to Jewish nationalists, too.

This should be the easiest statement to make right now. For EVERY Jewish organization and community:

The GOP has a Christian nationalist leading DOD, a guy who suggested COVID was designed to spare Jews probably running HHS, a lady who pushed Great Replacement at the UN, a guy too tied to white supremacists for Trump 1 headed to State, and a guy who podcasted w a Holocaust denier running FBI 1/2

We call on Jews of conscience to be the leadership our community needs, and make clear that we will resist any attempt by Trump to forcibly expel another generation of Palestinians. Our safety is tied together, and always will be.

I would like to believe that this is the moment when the American Jewish community as a whole (and not just liberal or leftist orgs) will rise up and say, "This is too far. We will not support Israel if this is their government's policy."

One effect of legacy American Jewish organizations like the ADL and AJC going so hard into “anti-Zionism is the major form of antisemitism” is that a lot of people now think, “My Zionism means I cannot be antisemitic.” In fact, these positions are perfectly compatible! See also: Orbán, Viktor.
