The "we prefer to leave the interpretation up to the fans" cop out is worn out and it sucked back when they did it with Breath of the Wild.

Realistically they can keep going with nothing of substance, though I've seen a lot of negative reactions to Tears of the Kingdom's abysmal narrative as well.

At any point that they do want to try with a story, they will have to address the problem of the broader lore, so having the timeline helps to that end.

But I don't really understand the aversion to investing in a good narrative. Why not give fans more ways to love and appreciate the games?

It's very fascinating that the current climate is "Hyrule Historia is OK, I guess, but absolutely not Encyclopedia". The reasons to reject any of them were equally silly at every point of the way but I wonder how long until people get over the book that came out over seven years ago.

Removing the sequel trilogy would do so much to fix the rest of the existing properties. So few of them are actually good but they're also seriously hindered by having to thread that needle.
