I remember fretting awfully for some of my friends. (Relatives were all Catholic, so they were "safe")

Same. I remember a couple of kids who weren't religious -- the nuns treated them differently; depending on the mood of the day, they were either disciplined more harshly, or felt sorry for, because they would surely end up in hell. Heaven and God's grace was for Catholics only.

We immigrated to Australia from southern Germany when I was in my teens. Couldn't BELIEVE how free people could be with their lives.

Intrigued by northwestern Pennsylvania -- will be googling!
