ICEโs Spectacle of Intimidation
Immigrants showing up for court dates in Manhattan must now navigate past rows of masked federal agents.
Mark Petersonโs black-and-white images of ICE agents evoke film noir and the urban-crime photography of the 1930s and โ40s. โIf someone is doing everything right, and then they still get detained, itโs a crime scene,โ he said.

Image is a collage with two images.
On the left, there is an image of the barracks at Auschwitz, the largest Nazi concentration camp where an estimated 1.1 million people were murdered. Each of the wooden bunk beds has 3 beds, but the space was often overcrowded. Incarcerated people also had limited or no access to water, toilets, and bathing sites; were underfed with poor-quality or spoiled food; and were exposed to many of the harsh environmental elements. Rats, lice, and contagious diseases were a constant problem. Prisoners were often abused by the guards. The image is labeled, "Then," with black text on a white backdrop.
On the right, there is an image of the barracks at an ICE Detention Center in Florida, aka Aligator Alcatraz, which currently houses over 900 people in tent structures on an airstrip in the Everglades. Each of the bunk beds has 2 beds, but the space is described by lawmakers as overcrowded with over 30 people crammed into a single cage. Incarcerated people there report they have limited or no access to water, toilets, and bathing sites; are underfed with poor-quality, infested, or spoiled food; and are exposed to many of the harsh environmental elements such as rain, extreme heat, mosquitoes, vermin, and lice. Contagious disease spread is a problem and many people are getting sick. They also report being abused and beaten by guards. The image is labeled, "Now," with black text on a white backdrop.
Image of the Auschwitz barracks is set next to text on a white backdrop. Behind both, is an image of Auschwitz prisoners in the barracks. Text states: "This is an image of the barracks at Auschwitz, the largest Nazi concentration camp where an estimated 1.1 million people were murdered. Prisoners were often abused by the guards."
Image of the ICE Detention Center, Aligator Alcatraz barracks is set next to text on a white backdrop. Behind both, is another image of the barracks. Text States: "This is an image of the barracks at ICE's Aligator Alcatraz, which currently houses over 900 immigrants in temporary structures. Each of the bunk beds has 2 beds, and over 30 people are crammed into a single cage. Detainees say they have limited or no access to water, toilets, and bathing sites; are underfed with poor-quality, infested, or spoiled food; and are exposed to many of the harsh environmental elements such as rain, extreme heat, mosquitoes, vermin, and lice. Contagious disease spread is a problem and many people are getting sick. They also report being abused and beaten by guards."
"Depart from me, you who are cursed... For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me." - Jesus

As a Texan... there's a lot of us who have been fighting for decades. Go look at the major cities- almost all go blue. Look at the population differences for state/fed Congress reps. And look at how damn close a lot of elections are. TX GOP is scared. They're redistricting bc they're losing ground.

I also used Adobe Express to create basic PowerPoints for video lectures and project guidelines, if you want something simple. For texts and more interactive content, the more robust Adobe website programs are the way to go.

I was building my courses on Adobe- the creative plan gives access to website building programs. I think your best bet is to create your own website with password-protected course sections. You can still enter grades. You can also build an OER text through something like Pressbooks

Here are scripts for opposing the #Trump EO that seeks to forcibly institutionalize mentally ill and neurodiverse ppl, as well as imprison homeless ppl. Putting ppl in cages will NOT solve homelessness, make us safer, or help ppl get help. It's esp telling that the EO defunds data-backed solutions.

Ed Roberts on the Berkeley Campus and at a protest. Roberts demanded to be able to attend Berkeley, opening up higher-ed to disabled people. He fought for disabled rights all his life, and even led a group of disabled vigilantes who smashed sidewalks and installed concrete ramps so people in wheelchairs, aka disabled students, could safely exit a sidewalk onto the street and get to places they needed to go without someone to lift them.
Black and White image of Judy Heumann with Ed Roberts in the background. Judy is wearing a white shirt, dark sweater, and glasses. Her dark, straight hair is tucked behind her ears, and there are papers and a microphone on a table in front of her.
Judy Heumann lost the ability to walk due to childhood polio. She spent her life breaking down barriers and fighting for disabled people. She, like Ed Roberts, was a pioneer for disabled students in higher ed. She was the first teacher in NY to use a wheelchair at work. She also organized the impressive 504 Sit-In protest. "She lobbied for legislation that eventually led to the federal Americans with Disabilities Act, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the Rehabilitation Act. She served as the assistant secretary of the U.S. Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services, beginning in 1993 in the Clinton administration, until 2001.
Heumann also was involved in passage of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which was ratified in May 2008.
She helped found the Berkley Center for Independent Living, the Independent Living Movement and the World Institute on Disability and served on the boards of several related organizations including the American Association of People with Disabilities, the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund, Humanity and Inclusion and the United States International Council on Disability." (KVNU Memorial of her life)

Video posted on TikTok by More Magical Than Practical. The video has white text across the middle that states "Gaza is being starved. The difference between us & them is geographical luck." over a series of short clips showing a romanticized and aesthetic country life with goats and ducks in fields, sunrises over wildflowers, candle lit kitchens with wildflowers in vases, and lazy cats enjoying a slow life. The audio is soft, piano music with a clip from Angelina Jolie's Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award speech. Jolie says:
"I have never understood why some people are lucky enough to be born with the chance that I had, to have this path in life, and why across the world there's a woman just like me, with the same abilities and the same desires, the same work ethic and love for her family, who would most likely make better films and better speeches, only she sits in a refugee camp and she has no voice. She worries about what her children will eat, how to keep them safe, and if they'll ever be allowed to return home. I don't know why this is my life and that's hers."

Since BlueSky wouldn't let me add the audio text in alt, here it is speech text and alt has full info for video with the speech text. @jay.bsky.team please let us put longer alt descriptions for videos. Disabled ppl deserve equal access on social media.

I'm so grateful for my safe home, loving spouse, full fridge, & healthy kids. But it feels like I'm on a tightrope with no net. Below, the crying others who are just like me but had no tightrope or fell with a gust of unpredictable wind. I didn't earn my blessings; they don't deserve their suffering

Not sure what period you are interested in but the Whitman Society has digitized most publications about Leaves of Grass and Wally (as I like to call him). There also used to be a digitized collection of microfilms of Early American newspapers that included literary reviews.

@pelosi.house.gov I think you've forgotten how that bill and other #disability laws passed. We crawled up the Capitol to get your attention, we slept on floors occupying your offices for 25 days, we risked everything for a more inclusive future. And you let that bill pass with barely a whisper. #ADA

Agreed but Congress refuses to do this. It's upsetting... the next time you have a majority, this should be a priority. Hell, just cap what can be spent on any campaign and make it hard to be rich in Congress and you'll lose a lot of the horrible ppl to other professions.

Rasmus Jarlov on Twitter writes: "There is nothing to celebrate. Moving from average tariffs of less than 2% on trade between the USA and Europe to 15% under todayโs deal will inevitably lead to inflation. Almost everything will become more expensive in both Europe and the USA, and we will all be worse off. The economic illiteracy in the White House is doing serious damage to the West."
Stylish Skunk replies: "I have a feeling you have 0 idea what you're talking about.
In fact I know you do."
Rasmus Jarlov responds: "Of course. I am former minister of trade in Denmark and you are an anonymous Twitter profile. You probably know a lot more than me. For sure."

This is a very poor take that relies on the government, which is being run by ppl who hate that Medicaid exists at all, will build a fair algorithm to assess applicants. Even with the best intentions, algorithms almost always have problematic biases....

The landlord gutting Americaโs hospitals
Medical Properties Trust buys up hospitals and then leases them back to health care systems. Dozens of its hospitals have gone belly up.
One reason so many American hospitals are struggling? Investors buy them up, then suck them dry, charging such high rents that services are gutted.
Reveal explores what happened to one Louisiana hospital when Medical Properties Trust came to town. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

This is true of any group of ppl though. But the Disability Rights movement does tend to coalesce around certain issues- like being deeply concerned when the government wants to remove protections and throw ppl into Asylums.
