DON'T compare right-wing ideology to mental illness or disability. Don't even associate it. It's actually ableist, and I'm not even joking.

They're not hateful because of their mental ability. They got indoctrinated into fascism & bigotry, and they actively & continuously choose not to change.

Now *this* is what AI is good for! This is an expert system developed by applying machine learning to a specialist, selected dataset, is designed for a specific, technical purpose, refined by human experts. And does not require the wholesale theft of creators' copyright intellectual property.

I know some folks are like, "I'm autistic and I CAN do those thing" and that's great, but that's actually not why this statement is horrifying.

It's horrifying because he's saying anyone who isn't "normal" and isn't "productive" don't have valuable lives, so should they really be alive?

Hey #IEEE, can you explain where your "Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at IEEE" page went?!

Last week, it was still linked on the front page.

Now: It's gone, and the old link goes to "We are sorry, the page you are looking for has been moved or removed."

The notion that Trump's "I'm king" tweet is "just trolling" or "a joke" presents an opportunity to recreate my just-joking thread (porting it over from the Bad Place):

1. I wrote my PhD dissertation on the social function of humor (in literature & film) and here's the thing about "just joking."

I have started calling it "the seduction of everyday."

I have spent 30 years reflecting on the fact that the day the war roared into my hometown, my parents got up, sent us to school, and then went to work. As if the country was not burning down all around them.

Excerpt from a public letter Roald Dahl wrote encouraging people to vaccinate their children.

Olivia, my eldest daughter, caught measles when she was seven years old. As the illness took its usual course I can remember reading to her often in bed and not feeling particularly alarmed about it. Then one morning, when she was well on the road to recovery, I was sitting on her bed showing her how to fashion little animals out of coloured pipe-cleaners, and when it came to her turn to make one herself, I noticed that her fingers and her mind were not working together and she couldn’t do anything.

β€œAre you feeling all right?” I asked her.

β€œI feel all sleepy,” she said.

In an hour, she was unconscious. In twelve hours she was dead.

The measles had turned into a terrible thing called measles encephalitis and there was nothing the doctors could do to save her. That was twenty-four years ago in 1962, but even now, if a child with measles happens to develop the same deadly reaction from measles as Olivia did, there would still be nothing the doctors could do to help her.

On the other hand, there is today something that parents can do to make sure that this sort of tragedy does not happen to a child of theirs. They can insist that their child is immunized against measles. I was unable to do that for Olivia in 1962 because in those days a reliable measles vaccine had not been discovered. Today a good and safe vaccine is available to every family and all you have to do is to ask your doctor to administer it.

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.

There has been a shift in the Trump team's language in their anti-DEI attacks. All of a sudden they started calling it "DEIA", with the A being "accessibility". If you don't think it's a coordinated effort to remove disabled people from every facet of life, well I have news for you.
