And the Parasite of Mortrex is done! Had a blast painting it. Gluing it together… not so much. Nothing seemed to fit quite right, as the gaps in the pictures clearly show.
Anyway, he’s the last of the Vardenghast Swarm. So, week 43: Minis 50, Combat Patrols 1 😁

Two decal sheets from forgottenchapters.eu laid out on a dark surface. The left sheet features rows of tiny texts, heraldic symbols, purity seals, and small icons in black, red, and gold. The right sheet is filled with various Maltese crosses in black, white, red, and metallic tones, arranged in different sizes.

The decals from @forgottenchapters.bsky.social I ordered for the Biker Chaplain arrived and they look fantastic. Thanks, Bruno!
Also got a sheet of Maltese crosses… I know, technically they belong to the Black Templars, but they just look too good 😁

You’d think so, but for the Parasite I actually used contrast paint thinned about 1:4 with contrast medium. Total accident, I already had some mixed and figured I’d just try it, and it worked surprisingly well. So I’d guess it’s also possible to wick out some moisture with glaze medium.

Thank you.

I’ve spent quite a while trying to figure out how glazing actually works. Every time I thinned the paint it just got way too runny. Then I saw on YT about pulling some of the moisture out of the brush and that changed everything. Still not perfect, but it finally looks like actual glazing 😅

Sure. After thinning the paint and loading the brush, I touch it to a paper towel to wick out some of the moisture. That leaves the paint thin but not runny, so it doesn’t flood the surface. It gives you way more control when applying glazes in thin, semi-transparent layers.

Close-up of a Tyranid carapace piece painted in deep red tones with darker shading in the recesses and subtle glazing transitions toward the highlights. The underlying chitin structure is bone-colored with dark recesses, giving it an organic, layered look. The piece is held in a blue-gloved hand above a cutting mat with a grid pattern in the background.

Since I’m making good progress with the Parasite, I figured I’d give glazing another try. And holy cow, pulling the moisture out of the brush after loading the paint actually worked. Not the nicest glaze job ever, but for the first time, it really looks like one. 😁

The Captain is done! Can’t believe I actually managed to finish him in a week. Lots of stuff I’d never tried before — some worked out great, some not so much. But overall, I’m really happy with how he turned out.

#WarhammeCommunity I’m a bit unsure about the decal, it is a bit too small for the shield. What should I do?
1️⃣ Leave it as is
2️⃣ Paint the rim black
3️⃣ Remove the decal, paint the shield white, cut out only the cross, and place it on the black shield?

1st attempt at painting a cloak. Not utterly terrible, but not great either. Even though I thinned the paints down to almost wash consistency, I just couldn’t get smooth transitions, the layers are way too visible. Also, Nuln Oil probably wasn’t the best choice for the shadows 😅 #WarhammerCommunity

The Prime is done. The edge highlights didn’t quite turn out the way I imagined, should’ve stuck with drybrushing instead of doing them by hand. But so what, overall he’s okay, and we paint and learn. Next to tackle: The captain

Honestly, not sure. They claim to be 135 watts, but according to the Amazon reviews that might be a bit… optimistic. They’re supposedly 50 in reality. Still bright enough to signal passing aircraft 😂. One probably would’ve been plenty… but they came as a double pack, and who am I to deny destiny?

Back at the painting desk after a week of forced break, and finally a chance to try out my new lighting setup: two IKEA lamps fitted with daylight photo bulbs.

My Axis Vogelspinne, "Otto the Great", is now finished!

I tried something a bit different with the camouflage scheme. I think it works well with what I want & I'm now carrying over for all my Axis forces.

I guess my bold words caught the attention of the Primordial Annihilator…
He sent me three days of high fever and landed me in the hospital today.
So no painting for me this week. But guess what? Still loyal to the throne 💀

To hit my 52-in-52 target, I’m down to 5 minis left…and wouldn’t you know it, exactly 5 remain from my first 2 Combat Patrols: the Prime, the Captain, the Psyker, the Parasite of Mortrex, and the Bike Chaplain.
Three months left… should be doable, right? 😅
