This is an exact encapsulation of why I moved to Bluesky.
No amount of handwringing in the Atlantic about how I owe some eternal Promethean suffering to the discourse is going to make me stay on a site I hate, that stopped doing anything for me professionally years ago.

I also find it a little illogical to use Ireland's past refusal of refugees to denigrate someone who, in the present, is foremost in fighting today's refusals. Point is to change things no?

Sorry, I'm out of social media practice and I'm probably missing a joke here! I've known her for years - she learnt Irish in middle age alongside my mom in the Acadamh ar an gCeathrú Rua. She's consistently been great - from water issues to the Mother and Baby Homes. Lovely lady.

Smug/naive does not describe Catherine. She is a well-respected, down to earth, humble and dedicated politician in Galway for over two decades; considered such a steady and fair hand that TDs in the large parties broke the party whip to vote for her as Ceann Comhairle.

We’re thrilled that the @businesspost.bsky.social has published a major investigation based on findings from our @erc.europa.eu-funded project at @ucddublin.bsky.social. It shines a spotlight on how multinationals shift profits through Ireland. A thread👇

Thinking about historical parallels. People talk about coups and autogolpes, the fascist seizure of power in the 1930s, and there are resemblances. But there are other models we could think about.

left side has a pic of audre lorde-black black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet, with hands by her face. right side white text on black background that says, "Women of Color in America have grown up within a symphony of anger at being silenced at being unchosen, at knowing that when we survive, it is in spite of a world that takes for granted our lack of humanness, and which hates our very existence outside of its service. And I say symphony rather than cacophony because we have had to learn to orchestrate those furies so that they do not tear us apart. We have had to learn to move through them and use them for strength and force and insight within our daily lives. Those of us who did not learn this difficult lesson did not survive. And part of my anger is always libation for my fallen sisters."
left side: white text on black background, "Every woman has a well-stocked arsenal of anger potentially useful against those oppressions, personal and institutional, which brought that anger into being. Focused with precision it can become a powerful source of energy serving progress and change. And when I speak of change, I do not mean a simple switch of positions or a temporary lessening of tensions, nor the ability to smile or feel good. I am speaking of a basic and radical alteration in those assumptions underlining our lives. "

Airbnb landlords and holiday home owners are squeezing native speakers out of Gaeltacht areas
A consequence of the housing crisis is that it is accelerating the decline of the Irish language
There are overarching problems of course & I know holiday homes can be more complicated when emigrants are seeking to maintain ties to the area. However, re Airbnb between Bearna & Carna, 4 homes are available for rent, 197 are on AirBnB. The Banú campaign highlights this tuairisc.ie/slais-eile-d...

I agree with you ☺️ I used the phrase 'immediate' deliberately here as I see it as an emergency act that could be taken without delay to ameliorate crisis. Many people I know are struggling to find a place to live in Co.Galway at the moment. Airbnb & holiday homes are having a significant impact.

The most immediate way to revitalise the Irish language and stem the flow of young people from rural Ireland would be to ban Airbnb.

The immense popularity of of the PetiteKnit 'Sophie Scarf' is in opposition to conservative US interpretations of tradwife aesthetics. Instead a subtle show of the wearer's support of postwar central economic planning, anti-nuclear green peace politics & municipal district heating & cooling schemes.

Does the popularity of Scandi girl style & hygge home decor reveal the people's desire for Folkhemmet? When democratic socialism is shut out from our everyday life - the workplace, politics, media - the longing for bread & roses finds expression in sheepskin throws & a classy mule/barrel jean combo.
