Trump officials take steps toward a radically different NSF Efforts to shrink staff, budget, and focus have alarmed members of Congress

Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3

Trump administration welcomes 49 white South Africans as refugees The Trump administration is welcoming a small group of white South Africans as refugees, saying they face discrimination and violence at home.

This is revolting. Only white people count as "refugees" now?

Basic research advances science, and can also have broader impacts on modern society Basic research that doesnโ€™t have a specific industrial or experimental application still adds value outside the lab by engaging people with exciting research.

๐Ÿงช I love how this article explains how much basic research benefits everyone. As scientists we all (mostly) know this of course but it is worth repeating over and over given the political climate in the USA

Are Entomologists as Endangered as the Insects They Study? All life depends on insects. As many species decline and othersโ€”including disease carriersโ€”relocate, the entomologists who study them are becoming endangered.

The legendary USGS Bee Lab is being shut down. The 2026 budget proposal defunds the Ecosystem Mission Area, which supported the lab. If their science helped your work, thereโ€™s still time to make your voice heard. Read below. (1/4)

I heard it's #DeepDay, so here's a fun deep sea fact: we picked up 18 rocks from deep in the North Atlantic and looked at every single animal that was using those rocks. In total, we found ONE HUNDRED (and one) species* of invertebrates on those rocks alone ๐Ÿงช

Ten Vital Services Provided by NOAA (Beyond the National Weather Service) Far too much of the media coverage supporting NOAA only mentions one of many things they do: here are 10 more.

Lots of people on my feed are concerned about the destruction of NOAA by the Trump administration and Elon Musk, but much of what Iโ€™ve seen people post about is the national weather service. Thatโ€™s vital, but NOAA does so much more than that!

My latest, for @ucsusa.bsky.social

Not even wealth is saving Americans from dying at rates seen among some of the poorest Europeans Experts said a new study of wealth and mortality in middle-aged and older adults points to deep-rooted health risks in the U.S.

50 years ago, life expectancy in the US and wealthy European countries was about the same. A new study led by Professor Irene Papanicolas finds that today, the wealthiest adults in the US have roughly the same likelihood of dying as the poorest adults in northern and western Europe.

Stunning Antarctic Sea Creatures Discovered after Iceberg Breaks Away A calving iceberg exposed a region that never before had been seen by human eyes, revealing a vibrant, thriving ecosystem
