Wednesday's cartoon in The Mercury Newspaper: Jon Kudelka helped me get my first cartooning job at The Mercury. He also showed me how to be quick-witted and fearless. I was in a constant state of joke-envy over his cartoons. I'm gonna miss that feeling, but more than that, I'm gonna miss my friend.

Single frame. Chris Minns stands beside a massive tonne weight marked NSW POLICE being lowered by a crane. Visible sticking out from under the weight are hands, legs, a woman’s face, a keffiyeh and placards saying “NO TO GENOCIDE”, “FREE PALESTINE”, “HERZOG OUT”, “NO TO VIOLENCE” Minns says, “Thst should socially cohere them nicely.”
Cohesion.

Scene is Julia Gillard and Chris Bowen (then Min for Immigration) in a lighthouse with "Light on the Hill: written under the bulb.
Gillard is turning the light off, saying 'It was attracting the boats"
I have many, many favourite Kudelka cartoons but this, from 2011, is possibly one of the best Aus pol cartoons ever drawn.

How Cory Bernardi was inspired to push climate denial from US conservative groups
Climate science denial group the Heartland Institute helped inspire Cory Bernardi and Malcolm Roberts to push back against policies to cut emissions
Cory Bernardi, new One Nation pick, went to America to train in climate denial with #AtlasNetwork’s Heartland Institute. This One Nation, like Farage’s Reform, is a tool of reactionary billionaires determined that no fact will stand between them & profit. #Auspol

Mourning Bondi. Australia's hierarchy of grief - Michael West
Australia suffers from selective empathy. And nowhere is that clearer than in the way our political and media class decide who can mourn.

Australia is one of the worlds richest countries. we can afford $360 billions for nuclear submarines and $14 billion per year for fossil fuel subsidies. We can give away more than half the gas we export for free.…

Rob Hirst was a force of nature, a born showman who led Midnight Oil from the back
Phenomenal drummer and percussionist was an equally accomplished songwriter who embodied the band’s bloody-minded spirit
I wrote this some time ago - with all of us knowing this day would come, and Rob, of course, fighting like the bloody-minded bastard he was to the very end. He irrevocably changed my life - and how our country saw itself. www.theguardian.com/music/2026/j...

So sad to hear of the passing of the great Rob Hirst, drummer extraordinaire & heartbeat of the mighty Midnight Oil. He was a beast behind the kit. The Oils will always be my favourite Australian band, & getting to meet Rob 10 years ago was a memory I will always treasure. RIP Rob, you're a legend.
