In our setting, across a 2.5 year period, no samples exhibiting single assay reactivity were shown to be true HIV positives by PCR testing of the original sample or interval serological testing of the source individual.

The article describes the use of HIV-1 RNA PCR to aid prompt negative reporting of samples exhibiting (false) reactivity in the initial screening assay but not confirming with additional serological tests.
