@tautology0 @tautology@infosec.exchange @tautology.uk vi is the best editor. The Oxford comma is totally superfluous and does not need to be used in 90% of cases. "Die Hard" is not a Christmas film. "Internet" is a proper noun.

Don't go too far too fast on swimming or you'll knacker yourself out. I took me 6 months to get to the point where I was doing 2000 m in an hour; then I did my target swimathon distance of 2 miles, then just stopped. That was 2 years ago.

It's much worse if you leave a voicemail saying "call me back", with no reason for the call, and then complain because you never called them back.

Nah, this is FUD. You had an argument 10 years ago when HTTPS wasn't everywhere, but now it's stupidly hard to do without somebody going down a complex UX route to accept a dodgily signed certificate.

what a load of nonsense!

Public wifi is reasonably safe! Airports are even more because they have more CCTV than you can imagine and armed police.

people get pwn3d via phishing and malware/infostealers....

Joined to play half-life 2. Buying the DVD from the shop and grumbled because I had to install this silly program just to play it.

It's quite scary when you consider that your gmail account is old enough to legally drink (mine's a bit younger than yours: I created it in September 2006).

And yet, bluesky still won't accept it for age verification ...

Just to let you know the article isn't readable on a browser as it requires the Apple News app. Apple have managed to enshitify passing links to new articles, which is impressive.

I had to turn of the "wakefulness" alerts on my car as they went off after 15 minutes of driving if I put on sunglasses.

The irony of a visible alert, which distracts you from the road, to tell you to pay attention to the road is not lost on me.

I'd ban "however" and "therefore" used as conjunctions. Also the serial comma used as a fixed for bad sentence construction.

Semi-colons have their place; most people just don't use them properly.

Extracting Sharp MZ-700 BASIC Data Files – Tautology’s Blog

Is that not a standard save format from the Sharps? BASIC on the MZ-700 also uses 256 byte blocks for its data files, as I describe in my blog: tautology.org.uk/blog/2024/03...

*Can* be, as can many other common over-the-counter drugs (caffeine for one). A large majority of people go through life without a serious drinking habit.

It's also hard to ban: you can make alcohol very easily from common ingredients, so any ban would be ineffectual.

Although none of my stuff appeared on the community disk, some of my classmates' stuff did. It's a bit weird to read articles and see photos from 40 years ago in a primitive example of interactive media!

Over the weekend messing about with data has produced me this little overlay for Google Maps which shows the Domesday86 data for each D-Block. Abused vibe coding and spent too long learning about how the Domesday86 laser disk worked.

I tried vibe programming for the first time this weekend. If you can describe the problem it makes it very easy to rapidly prototype software. In two hours after a few twiddles and some minor gaslighting from Gemini, I had a basic working output that I can build on.

Because atmospheric temperature varies considerably. Once you get to the thermosphere it gets above 50 celsius. Okay that does mean that Icarus does need to fly over 100 km upwards.

How we turned a real car into a Mario Kart controller by intercepting CAN data | Pen Test Partners If you went to our PTP Cyber Fest over the Infosec week you may have seen the PTP hack car being used as a games controller for the game SuperTuxKart (a free and open-source Mario Kart type game). You...

Explanation of my silliest abuse of technology yet. (Though it could have been Mariokart, it wasn't as there's no decent non-emulator verison of Mariokart on WIndows)

Ah, I have no experience of that since my own uni days (which were decades ago). 20 year old me would vote for dinosaurs, but I was a geek.

Going by my own sprogs, it depends on the age: the younger they are the more it is towards dinosaurs. Cars would also work.

If its for teens, my own sprogs have disappeared into computer games so would be less fussed by cars or dinosaurs.
