04.12.2025 02:21 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Oh without a doubt! Hades town was on rotation for the same reason that the original Wicked soundtrack was: earworms galore. But challenging to memorize! My kid has better taste than I did at her age

04.12.2025 01:53 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0579 high-quality human genomes from @humanpangenome.bsky.social, Arab Pangenome and individual papers (CHM13, CN1, KSA001, I002C, YAO and KOREF1). Sequences available in the AGC format (3.7GB) and FM-index in the ropebwt3 format (20.3GB). For details, see github.com/lh3/human-asm

03.12.2025 11:31 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Some interactive examples of how survival is typically modeled, if youโre interested. The goal of my lab is for the survival curve in childhood leukemia to be a line at 100% survival that goes on for 80 years or so.

Waterfall and swimmer plots are supposed to clarify outcomes on the basis of RECIST outcomes (for solid tumors) and individual time on treatment/without incident (patient level, possible repeated events).
If progression, relapse, or mortality curves fall, thatโs good. Survival should rise.
Well obviously they should staple the faculty and staff to the degrees and solve that problem. Cuts expenses, too.

02.12.2025 13:58 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Does it bother anyone that the survival curve is described as going *down*?
Adjuvant chemotherapy makes the survival line go *up*. The ideal survival curve starts in the upper left and stays horizontal all the way to the upper right: l nobody dies.
Pr(survival) = (1 - Pr(death)) = 100%, ideally.
Phenomenally poor ideas

Iโm working on getting better at this (and using CI); the @bioconductor.bsky.social project has recently started enforcing it for new packages as well. It matters
01.12.2025 16:35 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Yeah but also you have a tremendous group of people demonstrating that potential in the first place! Itโs not enough to write papers, you must seize peopleโs attention so that they read the damned things ๐

01.12.2025 00:29 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Tulane is the other R1 in Louisiana. At 6.6x the in-state tuition of LSU, it had better attract stronger faculty, at least in law and medicine. LSU is a land-grant university with a far broader scope than Tulane, and can thus support departments which Tulane canโt. One-dimensional rankings are dumb.
30.11.2025 20:05 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0LSU, like UNC, also has to deal with meddling from state-level government, so itโs not reasonable to claim that โLSUโ doesnโt care.
30.11.2025 18:21 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Where do people go for academics if not where the most capable faculty are? It is difficult to make progress on hard problems without some guidance.
Disclosure: I am an academic, with courtesy appointments at two R1 universities, but I do not claim that any particular institution or system is best.
