Blue Proustian Moment is a really excellent yuri manga on manga plus (for free to read!) that is not getting nearly enough attention. Complicated and compelling protagonist together with pointed commentary on gentrification and classism. Read it today!

i agree with the criticisms of how gqux treated nyaan but I think deux is almost a better example of the show's contradictions. it pretends to be a critical reexamination of gundam only to include a stock-standard Crazy Teenage Girl who needs to be put down like a dog.

once you start thinking about it the sheer number of characters and plot threads that went nowhere in gqux is mind-boggling. even code geass wasn't this bad. just off the top of my head: diablo, alphacider, the pomeranians, comoli, cyber newtypes, kira-kira as addictive, refugees, beanie haro...

this is, by and large, true of the series as a whole, but the rock lady finale especially is 24 minutes of unrelenting lesbian propaganda, and it is glorious

I think it's fair to call gqux fanfic because, like fanfic, it relies upon preexisting audience investment in the characters and world. The ending revolves entirely around Lalah and Char and the show makes zero effort to establish either of them. It just assumes you already care.

had so little to do with the wider story of gqux (which was ultimately about shuji and char, and lalah and machu) that getting rid of nyaan and her scenes would've made gqux a tighter show. nyaan your vibe is too good for this show etc

Idk from what I see most of the creators are posting Machu/Nyaan art lol if anything Shuji seems like the late addition with his entire character motivation established in episode 12 in expository dialogue

yeah except Haruko didn't tell Naoto "i've never met anyone like you, I love you too," because unlike Shuji she's a real character with consistently depicted motivations lol

I just mean I respect gwitch's attempt to be ambitious and say important things, anytime you do that you will inevitably have a lot of flaws. Even just doing a "pretty good" job is quite impressive...as we can see when they *don't* do a good job lol.

I think people don't understand just how difficult it is to make a really ambitious story. Gwitch season 2 def had issues but it did a lot right and actually stuck the landing in the final episode. Gqux on the other hand...well...

honestly this is the first ep I would say is outright bad, because it was filled with literally nothing but exposition from beginning to end and tried to sell you on emotional stakes that the show never even attempted to earn. shuji/machu is genuinely one of the worst "romances" i've never seen lol.

I will say, if anyone can wrap up a bunch of characters arcs and themes in one episode, it's tsurumaki. episode 6 of FLCL is a masterclass in this regard. it feels right now like even he's bitten off more than he can chew, but we'll see...

I think it's a little extreme to say they barely even register the other's existence, I mean Nyaan shoots Kycilia to save Machu lol, it's more that we have very little sense of what their dynamic with each other even is because the show spends so much time on other things.
