Myth, monsters and making sense of a disenchanted world: why everyone is reading fantasy I have made the leap from literary fiction to fantasy – for those who think it’s mere wish-fulfilment, here’s why we need that thing with the dragons

"I’d argue that, as well as expressing our frustrations with the disenchanted world, [fantasy is] also our best means for capturing the ways in which the world remains enchanted, for all our strenuous buffering." - Francis Spufford

“Great Man” theories of history may have been wrong but “That F*ing Guy” theory looks increasingly plausible.

"Niceness" is about what you hope people will think you're like when casual thoughts about you come up in the course of the day.

"Kindness" is about what you hope you (and God) will know to be true about you in the middle of the night.

As a historian of Christianity let me tell you that Christians throughout history have absolutely loved persecuting other Christians. There is no period in which this isn’t true

BUT also note that the opposite is also true! There’s no period in history where care for the stranger was absent

I suspect I had a very stereotypical view of the South until I moved there, but once you learn the uses of “bless your heart,” and that the default tea is hummingbird food, it’s really pretty normal unless you bring up BBQ sauce. People have some very weird notions about what it’s like.

Microsoft CEO warns that we must 'do something useful' with AI or they'll lose 'social permission' to burn electricity on it Workers should learn AI skills and companies should use it because it's a "cognitive amplifier," claims Satya Nadella.

Lots of them are panicking that AI uptake isn't fast enough and they might run out of momentum to do the sweep they are attempting to do on society.

This isn't about AI, it's about the window in which they have permission to remould society.

First of all who knows what took place and who bit what.

But if this convo could in any way lead to my being disciplined or affect my personal working conditions, I request my steward or union officer (Jean) be present at the meeting. Without representation, I choose not to answer questions tbh

a chair covered in slobbery bites from a box of tissues and a roll of toilet paper. no cats are visible so we don’t need to make accusations

So, early reports show someone dragged a roll of toilet paper AND a box of tissues onto the chair and took one million bites. We need more facts before we jump to conclusions

The Blogs: The Growing Groundswell of Jewish Protest Against Israel’s Death Penalty Bill From the blog of Michael Zoosman at The Times of Israel

Yesterday, hundreds joined us and our partners to learn more about Ben-Gvir’s death penalty bill.

We are deeply grateful to our partners in Israel fighting day in and day out to stop this racist legislation. They should know: American Jews are standing firmly behind them.

Anyway, now that the tariffs were correctly ruled to be illegal, can we go back to discussing the fact that the government is literally building concentration camps?

"We owe conspiracy theorists a huge apology"

No we fucking don't. They were talking about a secret conspiracy of gay trans Jewish lizard people. The Epstein files uncovered a conspiracy of rich, straight, white, right-wing Christian men, which these motherfuckers never even considered.
