Panama canal situation is important b/c it creates a strategic southern pt of invasion to encircle Mexico & create a Great Wall on our "southern" boarder. don't forget a significant number of US manufacturers use Mexico like a cheap labor site, economically already US territory (thanks to NAFTA).
