when I was in my 20s I used to do a 36hr shift in a residential unit every weekend so I could do uni in the week. after a year I went mad and asked my gf whose flat we were in when we were at mine 🀣 Didn't recognise it at all! I dropped out and got a sensible job!

I think that's true but I think as a country we're more proactive in taxing income and spending than we are at taxing assets, which is back to front, to me anyway.

This is the internet we've ended up with. I remember the early days of the www, the sense of potential seemed endless, despite the relatively shonky tech. All that potential squandered through laziness. If we'd have all learned to use it properly, we wouldn't have all these harmful platforms.

Ok, but then why wouldn't it be massively inflationary in terms of rent? Any sensible landlord would raise the rent by whatever the UBI rate is. It would benefit those who own property, but not those who rent. In fact the UBI would go straight to the landlord surely?

What is to stop landlords from raising their rents by whatever the UBI rate is? It would certainly cause huge rent inflation. I can't possibly imagine that it wouldn't.

Bank of England’s quantitative easing scheme let β€˜inflation take root’ UK economy became reliant on cheap money due to the Bank’s actions, warns former permanent secretary to the Treasury

True, but it still caused price inflation. It was supposed to stimulate lending to small business and borrowers, but as you say it didn't really. But yes it was inflationary, as would be UBI www.theguardian.com/business/202...

QE was inflationary, this isn't dissimilar really.

27.02.2025 14:27 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

The problem with UBI is that landlords will just increase rent by whatever the UBI is and it will be inflationary anyway in terms of retail prices and most people will be worse off. Richer pensioners who own their own properties will benefit most ☹️
