Announcing the Final Release of WormBase
blog.wormbase.org/2025/07/23/a...
The White House's proposed budget would cut NIH research by billions, including slashes to cancer research.
My new home state Texas is projected to lose $2.1B in economic activity from the budget cuts, including $353M in losses from cuts to cancer research.
How about you?

This is infuriating, scary, and horrible. NIH needs to support a wide array of science that applies to ALL people. We never know when a finding in one area can apply to another disease or situation.
27.07.2025 12:15 β π 42 π 15 π¬ 2 π 1This is all very bad.
24.07.2025 12:49 β π 740 π 78 π¬ 5 π 8Also ngl but Iβd rather get a drink or meal voucher instead of sitting in recycled air for longer π
15.07.2025 23:17 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Oh yeah, forgot to mention π
Worms have holocentric chromosomes, so they have to do meiosis with adjustments π
I swear there's a bunch of loop-extrusion model papers that I can't remember right now
But I know that in worms, Cohesin is only lost from the crossover during meiosis I but stays holding the sister chromatids together for the rest of bivalent β argument for around?
Picking new members takes time: NIH staff spend 1-2 years screening candidates, getting approval, doing background/ ethics checks.
Some staff are now screening candidatesβ social media to see if they've said anything negative about the Trump administration or have been involved with DEI efforts.
NEW: In an unprecedented move, the NIH will soon disinvite dozens of scientists about to take positions on advisory councils that make final decisions on grant funding.
NIH staff were told to select others aligned with the Trump administration and told to expect placements by political appointees.
Choose something unhinged π€·ββοΈ
I chose the absurd cover and title on this romantasy that I knew was gonna be cringey and itβs fantastic for processing images

Need to start making some new time blocks in my schedule for Being Sad About the Careless Destruction of US Scientific Research

The whole scientific community has to make clear that all science across fed agencies is being destroyed in the US.
We can't just ask for our particular piece of the pie. The whole pie is being thrown out - saving your bit won't work.
BREAKING: A federal judge reversed National Institutes of Health's terminations of hundreds of critical research grants that were canceled because of their alleged connection to disfavored topics, including diversity, equity, inclusion, and gender identity.
This is a major win for public health.
Late-breaking workshop news! The NSF will be offering an information session to discuss new and ongoing programs and the merit review process. Registration is free. More information here:

1. When people lose their healthcare, the costs for people who still have healthcare go up
2. Many hospitals rely on patients with medicaid. Big cuts to medicaid close hospitals
3. Higher medical costs mean people have less money for other things, hurting/ruining UNRELATED small businesses
