In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the absence of a CLE requirement motivates new faculty members to drop other bar licensures (i.e., if they are barred in a jurisdiction w/ a CLE requirement) in favor of joining the Michigan bar.

It's not that, in the hiring process, we care whether you are barred in MI. (Even for clinical faculty!) But once here, it's relatively easy to become barred in MI. Plus the law school pays your dues and there's no CLE requirement. So I think (just as a general sense) that people do it.

I can! Plenty of high school students write like this when they feel insecure about their writing. They often resort to this sort of high-minded-sounding drivel to disguise the absence of a coherent idea.

This has me wondering if you are even a professor at the University of Michigan Law School.

My two recent recommend-them-to-everyone books are (1) Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, and (2) The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. Both are beautifully written on every level. And both are those rare books that I haven't stopped thinking about.

But still seems like the answer is to a convo w/ the teacher. I'll be interested to learn whether there really was no process.

So - without knowing more details, admittedly - this seems like either a bad decision on the merits or, minimally, an lousy process. If the admin learned about the material and disapproved of it, did they tell the teacher that and direct her to change the syllabus? /fin

This was a public high school with an outstanding English program. I was challenged as a thinker and a writer. I was treated like the budding adult that I was. That class laid the foundation for a lifetime love of reading and writing. /4

On my 1st day of AP English, my teacher told us that "without sex and Jesus, there wouldn't be literature." She said she assumed we knew enough about sex, and assigned us each part of the Bible to read and digest for the class, so we could recognize sexual and religious themes in the work we read./3

High school girls are subject to catcalls and more - all sorts of gross stuff - when they walk down the street. But we shouldn't assign poems that engage with that experience, capture what they feel, validate that it's wrong to be treated that way, and show them how art can reflect their world? /2

Yikes! If this accurately reports all of the facts then firing this teacher is a bad decision. I suppose it matters a bit what course it was and whether the students are - e.g. - 9th graders or 12th graders. But if she had no notice that the admin disapproved of the materials, this is not OK. /1

Ah, I see. “current faculty” reads like it means the UMich faculty. (Are *any* of the faculty plaintiffs members of the UMich faculty? I had assumed they aren’t but I haven’t read the complaint.)

“allowed” is a weird word to use here. And in any event, I’m not aware of anyone on the faculty who knows who the student is. (Admittedly, I haven’t asked anyone, but the student’s choice to proceed anonymously speaks for itself.)

Yeah, I think the best interpretation for him is that maybe the judge resembles his wife in appearance and/or speech patterns and it was a lizard-brain synapse-misfire thing. But who knows? Brains are weird.
