“Disappeared” is how Argentines and Chileans talk about the citizens kidnapped by military regimes of 80s and 90s. Today Mexicans use it to refer to those who vanish in the cartel war. “Disappear” is a verb, noun & adj: When ppl are disappeared, they become los desaparecidos—the disappeared

Given how much the history of the founding fathers was intertwined with slavery (and mere mention is thus the dreaded 'DEI') it wouldn't surprise me if they did actually end up getting unpersoned.

A Quote from Rudolf Rocker's 'Anarcho-Syndicalism: Theory & Practice', 1947. Quote begins: 'Political rights do not originate in parliaments, they are, rather, forced upon parliaments from without. And even their enactment into law has for a long time been no guarantee of their security. Just as the employers always try to nullify every concession they had made to labor as soon as opportunity offered, as soon as any sign of weakness were observable in the workers' organisations, so governments also are always inclined to restrict or abrogate completely rights and freedoms that have been achieved if they imagine that the people will put up no resistance. Even in those countries where such things as freedom of the press, right of assembly, right of combination, and the like have long existed, governments are constantly trying to restrict those rights or to reinterpret them by juridical hair-splitting. Political rights do not exist because they have been legally set down on a piece of paper, but only when they have become the ingrown habit of a people, and when any attempt to impair them will be met with the violent resistance of the populace. Where this is not the case, there is no help in any parliamentary Opposition or any Platonic appeals to the constitution'.

While it's very politically on-brand for an Anarcho-Syndicalist to be posting Rudolf Rocker, this passage of his has been playing in my head a lot recently, for obvious reasons.

Unimaginably disturbing that people from one country are being sent to a prison 'you don't come out of' in a completely different country by the government of a country they were living in. And people were warning from the start of The War on Terror that this would happen!

Huge crowds join anti-government rally in Belgrade after sporadic violence Police deployed hundreds of officers in full riot gear in and around Pionirski Park, where supporters of Aleksandar Vučić have camped this week inside a ring of parked tractors.

"The protests have swelled to include students, teachers and farmers"

When students and farmers are both protesting against you it's probably going badly.

In 1933, center right politicians not too different from Schumer decided to voluntarily give Hitler power of Chancellor, and later complete dictatorial power of the country.

They believed that giving Hitler unlimited power would weaken his political standing, somehow.

They never held power again.

This is a really good burn but also to a significant degree I think the Dems just agree with a lot of stuff that ordinary people find outrageous and at least some of their apparent incompetence is actually a way for them to have some plausible deniability about their own beliefs.

Even a few years ago these kind of comparisons would have been seen as very ‘Godwin’s Law’ and a bit much. Now I genuinely think we’re getting closer to a 1-to-1 match.

The same law used to justify Japanese internments during WWII, among many, many other abuses.

Usually ‘justified’ (to bend that word to breaking point) by the US being at war with someone. Which raises the obvious question: just who does the Trump regime think it’s at war with?

There is a shameful British tradition of demonising disabled people. Why is Labour reigniting it? | Frances Ryan Ministers run away from a wealth tax and then concoct a punitive benefits system. They have made that choice and it’s immoral, says Guardian columnist Frances Ryan

Labour’s reported disability benefit cuts are not just about budgeting but a belief: paid work is a virtue (and people who don’t perform it deserve a worse life than everyone else).

So It Begins: The Disappearing of Mahmoud Khalil and Authoritarian Capture The Trump Administration kidnapped a legal permanent resident and shuffled him through an authoritarian maze. We're witnessing the beginnings of something terrifying

The disappearing of Mahmoud Khalil, a person with permanent legal status in the US, should be a red line that everyone should recognize.

They knocked on his door and vanished him into an authoritarian system without a trace.

Your door could be next.

This feels like a major inflection point. If ICE can apparently unlawfully arrest & disappear a permanent resident and it is not immediately met with strong opposition from the public, officials, and courts, there is no going back.
