The study consisted of a randomised, placebo-balanced clinical trial (with respect to EGCG) involving 129 cognitively healthy individuals aged 60 to 80 years at high risk of Alzheimer's disease being people who meet the criteria of SCD and carriers of the APOE-ɛ4 genetic risk factor.

Participants who followed a healthy lifestyle and took epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) — a green tea extract — showed less brain atrophy and improved Alzheimer’s biomarkers.

These results reinforce the importance of early prevention.

The results come from the PENSA study, a clinical trial led by the #BBRC and the @researchmar.bsky.social that studied whether it is possible to curb cognitive impairment in stages prior to the onset of dementia through the promotion of healthy lifestyle habits and the intake of EGCG

Dr. Gonzalo Sánchez-Benavides talked about “Diagnostic blind spot in clinical manifestations: anosognosia trajectory in preclinical #Alzheimer’s is linked to core pathophysiology, astrocytic reactivity, and structural changes in cognitive control and self-referential brain regions”.

Posters explored how late motherhood may accelerate memory decline in amyloid-positive women, the role of polygenic and cholesterol-related risk in white matter changes despite low cardiovascular risk, and brain metabolism markers predicting amyloid progression in preclinical AD.
