Dissertation chapter 1 is DONE!!
Well, the first draft (of likely a bunch)...I'll be giving it a thorough proofreading tomorrow.
Final length: 10,606 words (including footnotes).
I'm hoping to cut it down to closer to 8,000...

At church this morning right after receiving Eucharist, my daughter wanted to hold the pew Bible.
She then started flipping through while saying:
"Jesus, Book, Jesus, Book..."
Makes a father's heart warm to see his child eager for Jesus like this.
Ya...I'm still trying to figure out what I'm doing here...
23.02.2025 04:46 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This makes me think of the parable of the Elm and Vine in Shepherd of Hermas. The Elm represent the poor because they are the true spiritual power and standard, to whom the wealthy (the vines) need to bind themselves if they want to bear fruit.

How do people not see that he is setting himself up as a tyrannical dictator as full authoritarian! He literally said here: "do what I want you to do, or I'll replace you!"
Thank you for standing for peace and freedom AOC! Keep going!
Is there any example in human history of a Conservative person in power who was the Good Guy?
There are MANY examples of Conservative leaders being the Bad Guy...
Also MANY examples of Liberal leaders being the Good Guy...
What do you do when you're procrastinating during Dissertation writing?
You discover that people have left Google Reviews for places in Antarctica...and they are wonderful!
The more I engage with Lucretius' De Rerum Natura in the Latin, the more I'm amazed at the brilliance and beauty of it. I am not skilled enough to articulate in English the emotions that this poem evokes. It is powerful.

I'm having the same dilemma about going to Chicago in May (for NAPS). I'm probably going to take the bus, feels safer.
Thanks for the reminder about AAR/SBL btw...haven't yet checked the CFP, not sure if there is any good Patristics stuff though.
Making some progress in Dissertating! (Yes "to dissertate" is a verb...)
This picture pretty well captures my current experience...complete with my daughter's water cup and wet-wipes in the background!
Still, I'm making progress through my openning chapter!

Nice!
My paper is moreso on what Augustine did with the chapter than the chapter itself (Augustine's Tractates on John 44).
Basically he Allegorically takes the ex-blind man as symbolic of humanity on a three-stage journey to Christ (blind, anointed, baptized).
This Friday I'll be giving a paper on Augustine's interpretation of John 9 at this awesome conference!
If you're in the Hamilton area, you should come out!
