Today and yesterday Year 10 have been doing simultaneous equations starting with practicing adding and subracting 2 equations before moving on to figuring out which they should use to get only 1 term then solve.

Teaching people how to regulate their emotions is crime prevention.
It's addiction prevention. It's suicide prevention. It's generational healing.
It's how we stop raising adults who explode, implode, or shut down at the first sign of discomfort. Emotional regulation is not just a soft skill. It's survival. It's the foundation of a society where people can disagree without dehumanizing each other, where accountability isn't seen as an attack, and where conflict doesn't always have to mean violence. You want a better world? Start with emotional education.

Mathematics for pleasure – as important as reading for pleasure? The importance of reading for pleasure has been tested and proven time and time again. The benefits of starting young with this, not just to...

After a "Year of Reading" was announced for next year, I reflected on the importance of "Maths for pleasure" and what schools and parents might do to encourage recreational mathematics. You can read my thoughts here: educatingmrmattock.blogspot.com/2025/07/math...

Comment your thoughts as well!

Financial grammar tip. If you're dealing with numbers that could be negative don't use a dash as a separator, use a colon.

A screenshot of a Facebook post by Martin Lewis:

I keep getting people ask me "why has no one publicised that they've sneakily reduced the higher 40% income tax rate to Β£37701!?"

They haven't. In general you don't pay tax at 40% until you have earnings over Β£50,271. People are getting confused because of how it is displayed.

Most get a personal (tax-free_allowance of Β£12,570
Then you can earn Β£37,701 at the basic rate.
Which means you start paying the higher rate on any earnings over Β£12,570 + Β£37,701 = Β£50,271 as it has been for the last few years.
