Agree. So do Chinese-language communities, positioned differently on the political spectrum. The communities are still on X for a variety of reasons.

🧵 I want to follow up this earlier thread by examining why the USA finds itself in the state it does at the moment; the process of disordered discourse capturing state institutions and how it inevitably results in a slide towards authoritarianism, a process we're seeing unfold before our very eyes.

Meta's policy changes signal a need to reassess old constraints and seek new alliances, write Wei-Ping Li and Summer Chen.
In the wake of Meta’s recent policy changes, Wei-Ping Li and Summer Chen say this is a crucial moment–albeit perilous for the fact-checking community–to reassess old constraints and seek new possibilities and alliances.

Can US TikTok refugees find a home in Chinese social media Xiaohongshu?
For US TikTokers, flocking to Xiaohongshu is an act of resistance. However, some Chinese overseas dissidents find the action belittles the suffering of the oppressed.
I spent two days reading posts on XiaoHongShu for this story. There are a number of puzzles that i didn’t include in the post.
Am sharing my observations in the comment thread and maybe some of you can help me clear my puzzles.

I watched the revelation video by 陳 and 八炯 about how China tried to influence TW influencers for propaganda, but this song... I think it also shows the different Taiwanese identities.

https://www.npr.org/.../11/18/fresh-air-for-november-18-2024

Mass killings leave dozens dead, rattling Chinese society
After a spate of mass attacks in China where the perpetrators were supposedly ‘taking revenge on society’, some are calling for reform and greater social support.
It's frustrating that China deals with random killings by muting the news and strengthening its control of the marginalized ones, even though its surveillance + stability maintenance machinery has already left people with little space to voice out discontent.

Three takeaways:
1. The majority of false information narratives focused on criticizing candidates, then misrepresenting policies, raising doubts about the integrity of the election, and instilling fear about the election's outcome if a particular candidate won.
